Fun with cars

I don't really get what this is trying to show... Sure, I can make a display read anything I want, if I splice myself into the sensor line... When you start tearing into the ECU, there isn't much you can't do on a modern car. I could stick a small actuator on the throttle cable of an old car, too. Presto, instant acceleration. Big whoop.

I guess what I'm trying to say is you can tamper with anything to make it do something unexpected. And a clearly spliced wire leaves almost as much evidence as a stray actuator...

Ya, I thought this was gonna be a demo of them actually hacking into a production car with wifi or nfc or something. But needing to remove the dash in 308 easy steps isn't a hack, it's hard work!

And they've been doing things like that with engine ecus for some time now. They can change the internal timings from a laptop while driving around (probably best to have a friend do that while the other drives).

I don't think removing the dash was actually necessary. I think that was just to show all the computers in there. From the video at least one of the hacks referred to flooding the CAN bus and you can get there via the OBD port. There is an associated article on Forbes and it sounds like that's exactly what they did in this case. The article also points to another article describing wireless hacks that can take over control of a vehicle.

Sure locksmiths aren't allowed to copy the RFID in a key. But, for those cars with push button doors and start they transmit an established ID #. Record and playback of the streams has worked to unlock and steal a vehicle. Maybe the vehicle makers are getting smarter. But, unless there's a synched random key generator there's probably still some fairly easy eavesdropping possible.
