TAMPA - A giant Confederate battle flag that has been raised several times at the crossroads of two major highways near Tampa has been replaced with an even bigger flag.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans hoisted the new 30-by-60-foot flag Sunday near the intersection of Interstate 75 and Interstate 4.

A spokeswoman for the club says the original flag, which measured 30 feet by 50 feet, will be cut up and sold on eBay. The group hopes to raise about $30,000 to finish a memorial park at the flag site.

The memorial park and flag site are located on private property

I am somewhat apathetic. I do not fly the Confederate Flag myself, as my ancestors for the most part were not in the USA until well after the Civil War. However I do believe people should have the right to display it on private property if they wish. I am a firm believer in property rights and freedom of speech.

This is an interesting point, actually. When does it become unacceptable to fly, for example, flags in support of those defeated in previous wars?

I have no problem with that. I'd fly one outside my house along with the US flag if I didn't think my house or my car would get trashed by those who would be offended..

The SCV (Sons of Confederate Veterans) are an "interesting" group. There is a similar flag flying beside Interstate 65 (I-65) just north of Montgomery (Alabama). It is likewise on private property so from a legal standpoint, no laws are being broken.

The SCV is not without its share of controversy however. In recent years their national / chapter leadership seems to have strayed from their original intent yet members do not seem to object (at least not loudly). Some would consider them revisionists. I have no opinion of them one way or the other.
