The house of cars is falling down. Considering parts of the NE including DC are experiencing record snowfall, let us examine the facts.

15 months ago: Global warming means no snow or cold in DC

Ruh-roh! That didn't work, better scramble to find a new explanation.

Oh dear.. If next winter is average, does that prove Global Warming is real too?

Yet you think that localised snowfall proves the world is cooling.....

If you didn't already exist....

A house of cars? Since when have you been living in your car?

Only one problem with that.

You think that Canada, US, Siberia, Mongolia, China, and the Arctic are local.

PS I believe that Red does exist.

Actually Red, this is ridiculous. First of, Robert F. Kennedy Jr isn't an environmental scientist. I'm sure if you dig hard enough you can find all sorts of wild predictions and then use them to create a straw man argument which you have cleverly done here. Again, no global warming scientist has made specific predictions about weather in a particular area at a particular time. The only thing we should be discussing here is global average temperatures - with an added emphasis on the polar region as the temperature varies more so there and the effects impact the entire planet.

But since you love anecdotal evidence so much, I'm gonna give you a good one. Check out the long term forecast for the Northern Canadian city of Yellowknife. It's a balmy -10C right now, and they're predicting warmer weather for the next two weeks, all of which is way warmer then what they typically get up there (average around -20C, but could easily see temps as low as -30C or more on a daily basis). They usually don't see temps like this until much later in the year, like late April. So you can continue with you anecdotal evidence, but I can continue to respond with weather reports from up North that counter whatever claim you're making. Personally I think it's a waste of time, but if it amuses you I can play that game.

In another thread Fluffy told us that he voted against the Vancouver Winter Olympics. However there is at least one thing he may appreciate about the upcoming games: They'll illustrate to the world that Northern parts of the world that normally experience white winters are now experiencing green ones instead. Vancouver Olympics: Looks Warm Enough For Rain. This will be strong anecdotal evidence of Global Warming that the whole world will see. When was the lat time you saw Olympic downhill skiing in the rain?

Oh and btw Fade, your article is from 2008. Last year we did have a very long and cold winter here in Winnipeg, but not this year.

Based on Wiki weather, Vancouver was a poor choice to begin with.

2009 was part of the solar minimum and the 2nd hottest year on record. 2009 had 70% of the year without solar flares. 2010 is starting out with 5% without solar flares and increasing activity. It's always hard to predict if this is the starting of a trend or a brief hiccup. If the activity soon stops it'll be a hiccup. If it's another decade then the cycle happened.

Global Warming is a worldwide effect over time. A few cooler spots for a few days doesn't mean that the world has all of a sudden change course. There are certainly a few areas - Minnesota, the West Coast, that are warmer. These too are spots on a point in time. Climate change is a trend. It's more then a bit silly to look at Jan cooling a few places, neglect others, and ignore the rest of the year we haven't seen. We won't know the 2010 outcome at least for another year. Doing a cooling dance or warming dance is more then a bit premature.

You should have kept reading Glaucus.

Also known as Metro Vancouver. Honestly, I'm not sure where the ski hills are, I'm sure Fluffy could tell us without much effort, but I'd be surprised if they're inside the Greater Vancouver limits. And if they are, it would still be in the mountains which is what's really important. You know, higher elevation, lower temps, that sort of thing, where as Vancouver is on the sea level.

One of the reasons I voted against :)
But the biggest reason was the whole dumb "It'll put us on the map" idiotic babble from the promoters. Vancouver IS on the frikken' map - well enough on to be quite pleasantly busy welcoming visitors and businesses, and making the local real estate unaffordable to the locals thank you very much.

But we have to act like a bunch of yokels that think that what they really need in their smallville hick-town is a McDonalds or a Walmart to put them on the map - yeah, THEN they'll be makin' it!!

And, yeah, the climate here helps. Sure it gets wet in the winter but you don't have to shovel rain!

Indeedy.

Here is the location with the snow problems. This is Cypress where the snowboarding is and the snow isn't.
google maps - Cypress Bowl.

Cypress is a really nice hill when it's got its snow on.

Here is where most of the downhill events are:
google maps - Whistler.

Whistler is a FANTASTIC hill. It's about a 100km drive from Vancouver. It's further north and further inland and further up. It's also expecting rain for the Olympics. Maybe. It could go either way. There's a system moving in and the expected temperature is on the borderline.

Just discovered that google has street view on the actual slopes!!
have a look

Scoot on up to the summit. The view is fantastic.

Ah, ok, I've never been to Whistler but I believe it's world famous as far as ski hills go. And ya I knew it was a bit of a distance from Vancouver. I wasn't sure if they planned any events there though. As for Cypress, is that the hill you can see from Vancouver at night time when the ski lanes are all lit up?

Well that settles it, Google is beyond awesome! Who else could get that Google Maps Car on the slopes like that? But seriously, that really is cool. So much for productivity this afternoon, I'm going skiing!
