The Antarctic Wilkins Ice Shelf Collapse: Media recycles photos and storylines from previous years

It seems that not only is the photography recycled, so is the storyline. It seems to happen every year, about this time. Note the photos show shear failure and cracks, not melted ice. Shear failure is mostly mechanical-stress related, though ice does tend to be more brittle at colder temperatures.

Hmm.. Shearing and cracks? Where have we seen that before... Oh yeah! Europa!

Are there cows farting and domesticated pets on Europa too :?:

Thanks for the post. The article has some good pictures of the Ice Shelf over time. Be sure when you're looking at these things to use the same dates. Ice shrinks and grows with seasons. Compare the Feb/March pictures over time to the last one in 2009. One can clearly see there is less area of the iceshelf over time.

A good video to watch is James Balog @ Ted This is the change of ice in the arctic region. He has some comparisons of ice area and depths in the same months over the course of the years.

Antarctica is a place where we need more research (the Arctic as well). The easy measure of ice is area. It is a 3D object but that is harder to measure. Within the past year or so NASA released data on depth of ice and age of ice in the Arctic. I haven't seen the same sort of thing concerning Antarctica.

Great point now are the exact same factors at work on Europa as on Earth? It's a good question and unanswered and so don't easily presume it to be the case.

Take for example Venus lots and lots of CO2 in the atmosphere so much the planet is hotter than Mercury even while farther away and clouded from the sun. When heat gets in it rarely gets out.
