"A new study in the Journal of Medical Ethics says: … doctors who described themselves as non-religious were more likely than others to report having given continuous deep sedation until death, having taken decisions they expected or partly intended to end life, and to have discussed these decisions with patients judged to have the capacity to participate in discussions."

About another month back that stated end of life care centers do extend the end of life by about 6 weeks. Typically people in these centers have medical conditions, like cancer, which have no hope for a cure. Well and from personal experience the center lost my Grandma's Do Not Revive directives and she got another 9 months in pain.

Simply --- Thank God for Atheist Doctors!

Thanks Cecilia for the concern. In the end this really drove home to me the imporance of the so called 'death panels'. In reality what they are meant to do is ensure the individual's rights are described and knowledgeable to the medical providers. If we as a County respect the right of an individual's self determination it's highly important how we want to be treated at the end is knowledgeable to our loved one's and those that care for us.

While I personally wouldn't want a painful end of life with no possibility possiblity of getting better, there are those who want to live at all costs (aka my wife). They should be assured their final wishes of a long painful end can be carried out to it's fullest.

quality of life is what it's all about

some people in the medical INDUSTRY think patients are just slabs of meat

I really object to being somebody's Guinea pig

if I can't be creative and healthy I'd rather not be here

I find this definition is at the heart of these conversations. It seems to me the more liberal among us tend to have a curve that after a certain point X the value of being alive has lost it's meaning. We give the right to the individual to make the determination of how to establish X. Whereas conservatives tend to dictate the 'end of life' means when medical science can no longer keep your body from decay.

these people want a "daddy" to make all the decisions for them. They don't want to take responsibility for their own lives. or the length of it. or the quality of it.

in this case "daddy" is the medical community.

there's no way I would ever take medical advice from anyone without doing research. that doesn't mean I don't appreciate someone's education or experience, but I don't take information without doing my own thinking.

letting someone do your thinking leads to these dumb 'end of life' notions.
