Goodbye Iraq: Last US combat brigade heads home

"Combat?"
Yes, the fact that over 50,000 US troops will remain in Iraq makes the word almost meaningless in this context.

However the use of that word allows them to carry out this absurd pantomime and lots of people will fall for it.

Iraq remains occupied by US forces and will continue to be occupied by US forces for years to come.

I suppose I could've just said, "combat-schmombat!"

i can't wait for the military to leave German and Japan, too

US exit from Iraq is a phoney withdrawal

50,000 armed US troops, backed up by major military hardware and artillery and who will operate in "self-defence" and could intervene in armed combat at the request of the Iraqi government.

As volatility continues to grip northern Iraq and the south experiences an increase in attacks, those triggers for American intervention could come sooner than most think, rendering the whole withdrawal of "combat" troops a meaningless, public relations stunt that makes a mockery of the intelligence of the Iraqi and American people.

I don't think they're trying to fool anyone really. They said combat troops only, but they're leaving plenty of troops behind for obvious reasons and it's no secret. I don't think they're trying to trick us into believing that ALL US troops are leaving, but if you look at the troop levels they haven't been this low in many years. The real question is, will the troop numbers keep going down or will they level off like this for decades? Probably the latter.

The clarification of "combat troops" is important, but just think.. How many troops do we have in England, Korea, Germany? I'm fairly certain that each country represents between 25 and 50k US troops on the ground.

What it does mean is that we will no longer be carrying out "mass" combat operations. Search and Destroys, bombing, etc...

and, frankly, I AM happy about that

I've said this many times before: no one wins in a war.

some lose slightly less, but nobody wins.

war is just dumb.

it's SO easy for morons to start wars (I will never forget how bush was chomping at the bit to get into Iraq. it made my skin crawl).
and SO hard to stop a war and recover from the horrible effects.

but at least things are leveling off in Iraq. sort of

Keeps the governments in line. Makes sure they make the correct "economic choices".

It means soldiers go on patrols and respond "defensively" to attacks.

Bingo!

I imagine there will be US troops in Iraq long after we're all gone. Once they're in a country, it tends to be more or less permanent.
