Something that I haven't yet seen here is the new State Department’s new Office of Faith-Based Community Initiatives . The State Dept has built an office to do outreach to religions around the world. "It’s a positive and timely step that should increase the State Department’s ability to effectively engage religious actors, as issues of religion and state are more relevant than ever" is what is being claimed.

So much for the separation of Church and State. As for the typical Obama is coming for my Gun and my God, claims do realize this is not really all that new. GWBush created a White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, within the Executive Branch. Prior to Bush other Presidents have had Faith Spending items in the Executive Budget and encouraged, mostly Christian, Churches and actions of faith communities around the USA.

It's a depressing indictment on the state of 21st century society that pandering to mythical gobbledygook is still rife.

The problem is that in a lot of cases there simply isn't a secular alternative to the kinds of forum that a church service offers.

It's all well and good dismissing the religious and the organisations that they build. But until atheism offers a concrete alternative for the Sunday service, especially in more rural areas, it will continue to be a minority viewpoint outside of cities.

Indeed religion has frequent meetings every week. This does bind a community. With that comes both good and bad things. Atheists are starting their own weekly 'church' events. Atheist Church of England So, what you're asking for is coming.

Last I heard of this was when it was proposed in the US only to be lambasted in the strongest possible terms . A pity as I thought it a missed opportunity.

Such is life I guess.

Lambasted? I'm sure there are people who don't like the idea. (There always are.) But, there is no formal 'atheist church' or 'atheist pope' to give an official opinion. If the atheists want a sunday gathering then they can go for it.

Here in MN on Sundays the Rationalists and Free Thinkers get together. While many use that philosophy to get to Atheism, it's certainly not a requirement.
