No, I don't mean that the government shut down a theatre - the government shut down IS theatre.
One example is that they shut down a park that they don't fund. They used employees paid for by the government to shut down a park that the government doesn't pay for. Why? Either they are completely nuts or they are just mean - they want to show "the people" how bad it would be if the government went away.

Maybe they should stop paying the cops. Oh, but then people that own things would likely get hurt.

The National World War II Memorial was funded almost entirely by private contributions, as specified in Public Law 103-32. The campaign received more than $197 million in cash and pledges. Support came from hundreds of thousands of individual Americans, hundreds of corporations and foundations, veterans groups, dozens of civic, fraternal and professional organizations, states and one territory, and students in 1,200 schools across the country.
Donated and pledged funds were used to cover the total project costs of approximately $182 million. These costs include site selection and design, construction and sculpture, a National Park Service maintenance fee required by the Commemorative Works Act, groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies, fund raising, and the 11-year administrative costs of the project from its inception in 1993 through completion in 2004.
Remaining funds are held on deposit with the U.S. Treasury in a National WWII Memorial Trust Fund. The funds will be used by the American Battle Monuments Commission solely to benefit the World War II Memorial.

They're just trying to maximize public inconvenience. If you're a mega-corp sucking of the government teat the milk is still flowing.

Whether it comes from the top or whether it is an initiative of individual departments to look indispensable, things are being exaggerated.
The conclusion of the article is probably in error though. It won't cost the Dems anything come the elections because that's a year away and by then everything will be settled and both sides will be talking about what great victories they won from the other side and there will still be no alternatives to actually vote for and most folks will stick with their teams.

Park Rangers have put up orange cones in front of the scenic outlook stops to prevent people from stopping to look at Mount Rushmore

the National Park Service informed charter boat captains in Florida that the Florida Bay is “closed” due to the shutdown. Fishing boats are prohibited from taking anglers into 1,100 square-miles of open ocean, even if they have current fishing licensees. Fishing is also prohibited at Biscayne National Park during the shutdown.

They lack the manpower to keep a monument open but they have the resources to arrest and process people for going to the memorial. Methinks the community organizer is TRYING to start a protest movement.

--edit--

Oh wait. It's nothing to do with the shutdown - it's just a bunch of anti-war vets protesting. Nevermind. Can't trust those kind of protesters. What would vets know about war anyway?
