Justices Hear Second Amendment Case: Right to Have Gun at Home?

Wow! This is (as everyone here knows) my favorite topic and I missed this thread? What was I doing that day?

This court case is (IMO) a very sticky situation for both sides of the debate. The prior Heller case (Washington DC) only established individual gun rights where federal law (and to some small extent federal control / ownership of property) is concerned. It really made no decision / opinion as to the rights of the states and state law. But is does offer precident... to a degree.

One of the issues here with regards to the Chicago laws is the right to self defense in one's home (aka "Castle Doctrine"). Now the trick for the pro gun side is to claim that legal handgun owners are being unfairly singled out (you can own long arms / shotguns in IL). The trick for the anti gun side to to prove that handgun owners are not being unfairly singled out under existing Chicago law. Indeed, speculation is currently such that if the Supreme Court rules in favor of gun owners that the Chicago government will simply enact new legislation that is so complex and limiting (similar to Los Angeles city gun laws for ownership and registration) that the court decision would be moot anyway.

I will be most interested to see what the decision is and how both sides react. Personally, I find that while a handgun certainly has utility in home defense, a shotgun is far better. Either way, training and practice is key for any gun owner that wants to claim such a right.
