I was wondering if the fiscal conservative Republicans are watching the goings on in Europe? Germany elected a party that is cutting back the government. The UK, also, did the same thing. I ask you to watch what the effect has been...

Germany is now in a double dip recession. Supposedly the worst economic conditions since the 1930s.

The UK is teetering on the edge of a double dip recession.

The question I pose is why do you (or do you) believe the same sort of gut the government and gut the labor tactics that conservatives used in Germany and UK will somehow not cause the same sort of event here?

It's a plan. The results are obvious and have been demonstrated around the world in country after country - it's NOT like unexpected any more. And yet, the governments keep doing it even though at least 25% of the populations (and probably more) are NOT buying this. Why do governments which are supposed to be representing the people so often fail to represent the people and just go ahead and do exactly what is worst for the country and keeps handing the countries wealth to the same gang of characters over and over again. It can't just be serial stupidity.

I have not been following the crisis in the EU as close as I probably should be. From what I have been reading it seems the problems faced by UK and Germany are largely due to weakness in other EU countries. The problems of the EU are worse than the problems in the USA.

So the chavs in the UK should get even more "free" public money to buy cheap beer and fags so they can loiter and vandalize even more?

Actually, if you look at the numbers, the current German government has not cut back anything. Some media outlets have tried to portait chancellor Merkel as "Miss Austerity" but it´s a ridiculous PR fairy tale that is simply not backed up by facts. There is a big drift between what is being said in press statements and what is actually being done.

At this point, there are merely plans to make some cuts in the next few years. I guess we all know how these type of plans usually work out, though.

As a German, that´s the first time I hear about it.

As far as Germany is concerned, the government sector is as big as it was before. With regard to "gut the labor" tactics, the salaries of public servants continue to rise while private workers continue to be stuck with stalling incomes... If we really had cut-throat fiscal conservatives in our government, that would not be happening.

(Personally, I think salaries of public servants (including politicians) should increase OR decrease (!) based on the average change of private incomes to be determined on a yearly basis. I seriously doubt that it would have much of an effect but it does not sound unreasonable to me to provide public servants with an economic incentive to care about the well-being of the people they serve.)

Damned internet. That's what makes it so dangerous - that the local PR industry can be contradicted by foreigners.

In a completely different context, that may be a valid argument but I do not watch any German TV and generally get most of my news from foreign sources online. I also spend a fair amount of time on economics websites and I have yet to find articles that mention a recession in Germany.
