He's rich because he's better than us

I hope he's SO good he gets a vacation in jail

I recently rented a car to go to my in-laws which is a cabin 4 hrs drive from here. My little Prelude just didn't seem like the right car to take the little one along with her bassinet, swing and all our clothes so we rented a Mitsubishi RVR. Luckily it wasn't from Budget, but from Enterprise instead. Although nothing like that happened to me, I still kinda felt ripped off when they tell you that if you get into an accident you have to pay full rental price while the vehicle is in the shop UNLESS you buy extra insurance which btw doubles the advertised rental fee itself.

In fact, come to think of it, the entire motor vehicle industry is a scam.

There are 4 billion people on this world. Many of them struggle to stay alive. Many of them deserve much more a dry and warm place to stay, and a meal.
These so called "entrepeneurs" don't care if you're in debt? If you can't pay the rent? If you can pay your food?

I'd say strip them naked and drop them in the midst of Death Valley or the Antarctica or whatever godforsaken place. Let's see who's the self-made man now.
Oh, and let Murdoch make a reality-tv program of it while you're at it.

When I rented a car for my wife while hers was being repaired I was told any damage would incure a $4000 excess, the only way to avoid it was to double the advertised rate which would drop the excess to $400. Next time I'll just buy a $500 beater...

Next time I'll just buy a $500 beater...

Having a $500 beater in your fleet is actually a great money-saving move here in the US, or at least Michigan. In addition to never having to rent a car, you can insure it as cheaply as possible (Michigan is a no-fault state, you're mandated to buy auto insurance), and then drop the rated use for your regular car to that of pleasure vehicle. Often you can insure two cars in this fashion cheaper than just having the regular vehicle listed as primary use.

And then you have a $500 beater that you can use for any abuse you don't want to subject your regular car to. An old truck is particularly handy. Need to pick up some parts from Detroit? No problem. No one messes with a ratty old pickup on the street. They know the owner doesn't have anything in it. Bad snow? Sure, I'll give ya a push. No problem. Who cares if the $500 pickup takes a few more dings and dents? Need that tree stump pulled? Sure, loop a chain through the big ole' trailer hitch, and we'll yank it. If we happen to blow up the trans pulling... Well, back to Craigslist to pick out the next one. Still got thousands of dollars of jobs done for $500. :D

The problem with buying a beater around here is that we need to get a safety certificate before we can register it. At that point, it makes it hard to buy a "safe" beater for just $500. Which kinda sucks.

But ya, back in 2002 I bought a rusted out '83 Supra for around $1000. The engine was solid, but the body was rusted out terribly. Drove the thing to Vancouver and back. Aside from the burst coolant hose and dead battery, it worked out nicely. Ended up junking it when the clutch went. I miss that car.

So long as you know what you are looking for you can pick up a decent beater at the car auctions for $500. Having a general beater is a good idea, although here in Victoria they'll slug you $200-300pa for third party insurance and another $700pa to register it, I doubt I could justify the cost. My initial idea was to use the beater for the duration and then sell it for as much as I could, probably to someone else who needs a beater ;)
