America's defense budget is headed for a big reduction, as a result of the congressional super committee's failure to reach a debt reduction compromise. The automatic 10-year budget cut of more than half a trillion dollars now facing the military is reminiscent of a strategic decision Britain confronted nearly a century ago. When the empire had to address the profound debts it accrued during World War I, the answer was the Ten Year Rule.

America could take on just about any other country on earth with just a single carrier group with the exception of the Chinese and possibly the Russians.

I really don't think they have much to worry about on this score.

and if we (the US) actually used diplomacy instead of bombs we might actually have more allies and fewer enemies.

stop feeding the war machine

And if those alllies actually said' thanks but we dont need you pack up your base and go home', we'd certainly save some money. We have ~700 bases across ~130 Countries.

actually with all of our interference and misadventure in the world, stomping about like a tirading child haven't left the US basking in the warm afterglow of a favorable view by much of the sensible world. our tiresome support of the bully state of Israel as they clearly commit genocide against the Palestinians has helped us little either. forces are already aligning against us...

The "moral" of the story is that when you over extend and try to rule a big empire, eventually reality slaps you in the face and you find yourself forced to cut back and the empire crumbles. If you can't support a giant military then you won't have one. If you can't maintain influence then you lose it. After WWI Britain couldn't afford its empire any more. Fighting the war had cost it more than the empire could produce so it died of exhaustion. The final blow was WWII and the massive borrowing (from the US) that Britain had to do for the war effort. America came in when everyone was worn down and took over much of the old empire.

The big trick of empire is having a large and capable and dominating army and NOT using it. It's like having a gun against a lot of guys with knives. Nobody wants to start anything with you because you will win - but once you start going up to the guys with knives and start shooting then people will start counting bullets.
