a friend of mine MAY be summoned to Scotland for a film project. (and I don't mean filming. I mean Talking about maybe filming. Oy, this business is odd)

He is wondering about the expense of using a temp phone (say around 2 to 3 weeks, which is his stay in Scotland. Assuming it happens).

what is available over there, how much it costs and blah blah blah

I await brilliant advice

thank you

Does your friend already own an unlocked GSM 3 (or 4?) band phone? If so, then just buy a pay-as-you go SIM card in Scotland and you're off. That's what my sister did when she went to Dublin to see U2 last year.

My girlfriend does the opposite - she's got an O2 phone from London, unlocked, and using it here without issue.

Oh yeah, SMS should work fine, but MMS might not without special configuring. But really, who cares?

Also, you may need to buy some kind of power adapter for the phone charger unless your friend can use USB to charge.

ah, good point!

he's got an old Motorola but it might work

and he doesn't do MMS anyway.

If your friend finds his phone isn't unlocked, I'd generally suggest Vodafone as they have the best overall network coverage (though it varies from network to network depending on the area). But either way a pay as you go phone is probably the best way to go.

Cecilia, you said your friend has an "old Motorola". If by "old" you mean, off contract, then I believe by law the carrier must unlock it upon request as the contract fulfilled your obligation to the carrier. I read that's how it is in the US (it's not like that here unfortunately), so unlocking the phone should be a snap. If that's not the case, I'd imagine NYC is full of little shops that can perform the unlocking (heck, just go down to China Town and get it done at some Dim Sum joint over lunch  ). If your friend is tech savvy, there are tons of DIY guides to unlocking phones. If your friend's phone is a Moto RAZR (or any variant) then this should be easy as it's one of most hacked phones out there with plenty of resources on the web.

yes, it's a RAZR - V3 if I recall correctly.

it didn't say anything in the manual about bands, but I haven't stopped my research.
my friend is NOT tech savvy at all.....which is why I am doing the looking

thanks

Sorry cecilia, just noticed this.

Having said that, I can't add much to the advice you've already received.
A pay as you go SIM card is probably the simplest solution.

thanks - well that's a load off MY mind!

apparently it's a it's quad band gsm

how nice!

now all that has to happen is the guy in Scotland has to find some money.

OY
