You won't avoid BP just because you buy fuel that isn't branded BP. BP is free to resell their crude to other refiners, and free to sell their refined products to other resellers. All of the oil companies are strongly verticallized but that doesn't mean they can't trade sideways.
Also you have to boycott anything that was transported using BP fuel. That means just about anything except the vegetables from you garden (provided you don't use fertilizers and *scides).
And, no, the other oil companies are NOT better than BP. BP just got unlucky. They are all corner cutting rule bending cheapskates. It's a business, not a charity. You have to boycott ALL oil - but you can't do it comfortably so nobody will.

Regarding the stopping of the blowout, it would be very difficult for the government to take that on because
a) The industry is supposed to have the expertise.
b) If the government took it over then everything would be the government's fault from there on out - and even if they capped the well in less time than the experts would have they will still be criticized for "taking longer than the industry experts would have".
It's a political trap to try to take over a man made disaster. It is politically better to let private enterprise fail on its own terms.
However, leaving cleanup out of the equation, there is a time when maximal gain can be achieved and that is ... BEFORE the trouble starts. This is where Obama deserves to get roasted. The Obama administration intervened to overturn a halt on drilling in the Gulf. How's that feel, Obama. Burned by the World Socialist Web Site - ouch.
The irony is that just a short while back it was being mooted as a smooth move to push for off shore drilling and steal Drill Baby's thunder. The other irony is that it was a Bush plan that was stopped by the courts that Obama was reviving.

I've known a number of people like that over the years. I've also known plenty of people who smoke every day who hold down a job just fine. My conclusion is that it usually isn't the 'pot' that causes the problem. (and certainly not *just* the 'pot')
