House arrest ordered for two Fort Lauderdale cops accused of stealing money, making bogus arrests

The officers are accused of making traffic stops – which may or may not have been legitimate – in order to search motorists for money and pills, according to prosecutors.

If they found a large amount of money, the two would fabricate criminal charges, if necessary, to steal a portion of the money, the documents allege. Investigators also found evidence the officers stole pills, but they were not formally charged with that.

Koepke, 32, and Dodge, 30, would keep some of the money and then put some of the cash and drugs into evidence in an effort to conceal their actions, authorities said.

Open enrollment for LEO Academy is looking pretty weak at this point in time, at least to me. The individual colleges aren't doing back ground checks and hiring depts are not doing a full blown anal examination of applications (unlike the majority of the State's new hires which are State troopers and officers who get those anal examine style background checks but they pay for officer's training and a pay during training) because they are relying on the colleges to do the basic weeding through the academy. IMO, the reason why the colleges allowed their academies to go open enrollment was to shift training cost to individuals and away the dept that was doing the hiring.

Yeah, I know, that won't go over in these times of short budgets, but that is what needs to be done.
