How to be RICH!!!

Many years ago - maybe it was on a previous board, I wonder does anyone remember - someone posted a story about the elders of some small island country who had been molesting the local children but had all hung together (because they were the power elite of their community). I don't recall how they eventually fell or whether they merely weathered the storm because they could not be toppled... I recall saying something along the lines that criminality among the elites is not unusual because they know they have the power to have the laws not apply to them (in fact, if they do it, they hold that it is legal), and that the same thing applies in our civilizations as applies to theirs. There were some who objected because our civilization is so much more civilized - but I hold that civilization is merely an illusion of arrogance - that those things we find objectionable could only exist in other cultures.
The people who lived under those elders also thought the acts objectionable but it didn't much matter for the most part - but at least they understood what was going on. Are there enough people in our society that understand well enough what is being done to us and how simply we are cowed?
