As expected, the HP Slate got a "meh" response from a group who got a little face-time with the upcoming "tablet PC".

The main complaint over at Conecti.ca, in fact, seems to be the Slate's "long and annoying load time," which is a (unquantified) trade-off you would expect for being able to run a full notebook OS on a tablet.

I think that the Mexican site kind of jumped the gun on their comment. As Gizmodo points out, unlike the Apple iPad, you are in fact running a full notebook OS on a tablet. There will be a trade (although you can also speed up load times by doing custom startups.. we do it at work all the time).

Let's also not forget Gizmodo's followup comments - "It seems more like a compromise than a straight-up drawback, especially when you consider that this was a prototype and likely not a production-level unit. While Conecti.ca's verdict is "meh," it doesn't seem to be based on a lot of new information. We do have a better sense of what the HP Slate looks like now, though. And hopefully soon we'll pair that with a better look at how it runs. But for now, it's way too early to dismiss its chances against the iPad and its upcoming wave of challengers."

Still don't think I need one even with ports, but wake me up when Ubuntu is fully supported and price is under $200, then I'll consider it.
