I am not a number, oh wait I am #1,282

I'm of two minds about MorphOS. On one hand, I really want one because of the Amiga roots... On the other, I can't figure out what I'd actually DO with it after I booted it once or twice. This leads me to think that it would join my (admittedly smaller) crew of classic Amigas in their ongoing efforts to collect dust. :(

So, if you don't mind me asking... Did you pick it up just for the fun of messing with it as a hobby, or do you have some purpose in mind for it? If so, what?

@ilwrath
I gave up my retro hobby and sold all of my C= 8bit computers. I decided to finally register a Power Mac system to use as a modern system. MorphOS on a G4 Power Mac is quite usable, believe it or not. With 3.0 supposed to be coming out next month, it just keeps improving. I enjoy the Amiga-like way of doing things. To me the MorphOS route is by far the most useable and most polished or the NG choices. OWB 1.15 is slowly becoming the best browser on any platform.

My Power Mac is only 800Mhz and quite usable. I hope to buy a CPU upgrade (1.6Ghz or 1.8Ghz) in Dec. I plan to do a bulk of my daily computing with MorphOS. If you enjoy the Amiga-like way of doing things, I think it is worth it. Is it a hobby? Yes and no. Obviously the Intel Quad Core Windows 7 system sitting next to the G4 is much faster and runs the same types of programs, but I am actually using it for daily computing. I don't think daily computing truly qualifies as a hobby. I know people who own OS4 related systems who only rarely turn their computer on to see the OS update and then turn it back off. I also know get the impression there are almost no AROS fans who use it frequently, they just want to verbally support it in hopes it matures one day.

Clear as mud? ;)

*raises hand*

I'd be one of them.

I plugged my A1 in recently and it didn't boot. Hopefully just the CMOS needing replaced but I've no idea when I'll get around to investigating fully.

I also plugged in my Peg1 the other night and it booted first time, and the speed at which it did so still impressed me.

Then I turned it back off. :p

@Robert

Sounds like your battery died. It's one of the various hardware issues with the A1, seemingly they eat those CR2032 cells pretty quickly. I had the same thing happen previously when I powered mine up for the first time in a couple of years.

Indeed, it happened before, which is why I said I hope it's that. Only a few quid to fix. OTOH, I also had it refuse to boot another time and it turned out the cpu was fried because the fan had stopped working. That resulted in a rather expensive repair and the fitting of a heat-sink. If it turned out be a failure of that magnitude then the game, as we say up here, is a bogey. :)

LOL! I'm guilty as charged on this one, sir. I install AROS every so often, look at it for a few, and then boot back into Windows or Linux.

And that's another reason I don't think I'd use a Morphintosh. I don't use AROS very often, and it's only a boot option away on the system I'm already on. :P I guess I just don't care about the OS that much, anymore. So long as I can do whatever I want with a minimum of fuss, it's all good. Arrgh! I've been assimilated.

OWB 1.15 (Which I am using atm) is such a great browser! It is pretty impressive that I can watch 480p Youtube videos with about 45% CPU load on a PowerMac with 800Mhz CPU!

I picked up a used 22" Apple Cinema Display and WOW what an upgrade over the old 17" CRT I was using. I found a fair price on a 1.6Ghz CPU upgrade and it is on the way. I am enjoying this.

Well, the easy way to check is to turn it on with the case open. If the fan doesn't spin up... It's not as if the CPU will fry instantly, it takes some time to reach the temperature at which the silicon breaks down, even without a fan.

It would be nice to see how the CPU upgrade boosts things along. Keep us posted!

I'm not at home just now and haven't looked in that case for awhile but I'm pretty sure the CPU no longer has a fan. I had to replace it with a heatsink a few years ago. The PSU fan does spin up and the case lights work but other than that..

I'd just check the battery then. At most it will cost you some pocket change to buy a new CR2032 (or whatever the hell they are). I wish I could say "pennies", but the last ones I bought cost about 2 quid from ASDA...

I got my last one for around a fiver from Maplins.

Last one I bought locally was about $4 for one battery which is truly a ripoff.
