As most of you know, I've owned Apple stuff for at least a decade, and I've been running Apple iPhones since the day that the 3G was first introduced about 8 years ago. Since then, I've run with the "new every two" mantra, meaning I've owned the 3G, 4S, 5S models, and now the 6S as of last Friday... Each bought through the Apple Store, each covered -- whether you agree or not -- by AppleCare.
The exception is the latest 6s which was bought through Verizon (long story) but they didn't directly sell AppleCare for it, suggesting instead that I either buy their insurance or buy AppleCare direct from the Apple Store.
Verizon's "mobile device insurance" is a total rip ($11/month + a $199 deductible) so at lunch yesterday, I went to the Apple Store to buy AppleCare when the sales person pointed out that they couldn't sell me AppleCare because my screen was already cracked...
WTF?!?!?!
Not sure how it got cracked, as it was placed in a Spigen Slim Armor "hard case" 5 minutes after it was activated, but there it was, a nearly invisible crack running the width of the screen. Dammit!
So, I spent three hours standing around the Apple store prepared to have to pay big bucks to get my brand new iPhone 6s replaced or repaired at my own expense. (That particular store is always slammed, and appointments are usually booked a week in advance, so I was a "walk-in" on a first-come basis.)
To say I was frustrated and having a crap day was an understatement. I had shattered my iPad's screen a few months ago, but I knew damned well what I had done in that case (it slid off the roof of my car while I was grabbing other stuff from the seat)... However, this marks the first (and hopefully last) broken phone in all the 8 years since I started carrying iPhones
When they were finally able to get to me, the technician looked at the case carefully, looked at the phone itself, said "it doesn't show any evidence of being dropped, must just be a manufacturing thing", disappeared into the back, came out. handed me a new one and -- to my shock and awe -- said "have a great day!" (as opposed to "that'll be $300+ please")...
Joke all we like about Apple versus Android, but things like this are EXACTLY why I'm so happy to be an Apple supporter...
Lesson Learned: Spigen Thin Armor case ($24) == bad. Otterbox Defender ($49) == hopefully better.
