Why is it that I have such a hatred of sites like MySpace and FaceBook? It makes no sense whatsoever, I don't even know why I hate them, I just do. Anyone else out there share that or a similar sentiment?

myspace is poorly designed and that's why I hate it (I don't have one of those but I know people who do)

the only reason I have a faceBook is because a friend i went to HS with is trying to find everyone we know in HS...plus it's a nice way for me to show off my career acomplishments.

but I don't spend lots of time on it.

amd the design is WAY better than myspace

I am on Facebook. I check it about once a week. I use it to post a few pictures.

I find it annoying that people send me drinks and invite me to Mafia Wars. Those invites are promptly deleted. The survey's are often innane. As a rule those are ignored. Sometimes I'll do a survey anyway, if I'm bored.

Nothing wrong with you at all, I am the same way. I still do not have a profile on any of these sites. As far as I can see this nonsense is just an extension of pop culture, people desperate to conform and "fit in" with that the TV tells them is cool.

I think FaceBook is a cool idea. Not because of the silly "Mafia Wars" etc, but simply because you can meet up with old friends you practically forgot about. I was thrilled to find out one of my old high-school friends is now a make up artist for high budget Hollywood flicks (funny bit: he wanted to be an airforce pilot). I also keep in touch with with familly over seas and even found relatives I didn't know I had. When I go back to Greece I'll have plenty more people to visit now. So my profile is different from most - no crazy pics of me drunk at a bar, but there's a few pics of my parents and sister mostly for the sake of my relatives in the old country.

Although I do have to admit, I did install one app on Facebook that I do enjoy: DailyBabe. Nothing wrong with that. :-)

Myspace is poorly designed but it's been useful for my band.

Facebook more or less passes me by. A pet hate is when I get an email about a message from a friend via facebook when they could've just emailed me.

I can't stand Myspace... Too man kiddies and aimed directly at pop culture crap. That being said, I do enjoy blogging quite a bit, though I'm never sure what I should or shouldn't say. If I were to outline the levels of variation between giddy elation to what seems like near-suicidal depression that I go through on a regular basis, Demi Moore would call the cops on me and get me the help that I don't need.

I do however find myself using Facebook regularly to keep in touch with a LOT of old friends, relatives, and high-school chums. It's not bad for what it is, a microblog engine, and I even enjoy some of the games.

That being said, it's a good thing you spoke out, because you definitely wouldn't have liked the direction had I written Amiga.org from scratch.

I guess the only reason I started this thread is because everybody around me is right into it, the wife, the kids, and my proxy logs at work are chock full of facebook and myspace entries. I just can't get my head around the fascination, everybody I've ever really cared about has my phone numbers and should they feel the need, my email address too. Perhaps, I should just create myself an account and give it a try, at least that way I'd have a legit reason for loathing them so much :wink:

@Wayne

RE: a.org, TBH, I've kept pretty quiet about the whole thing, however, I am firmly of the opinion that it is your site and you may do what you wish with it. Whatever you decide to do, I will support it 100% because I know that you'll do what you feel is best for the community.

Now can someone please explain to me what's with that media craze over Twitter?

I read an article the other day regarding Twitter (can't remember where though) and how the majority of its users only use the service for a brief time before they grow bored with it and go dormant.

That would be tweeting.

Maybe it would be better described as "twattering"

As for Facebook, I sort of got dragged onto it last year by the family but I was never keen on it.

Then a Friend of mine who lives in the US now went on holiday and posted his pics, I replied and we had a bit of a conversation.

It turns out it's very useful for getting in touch with people who you never remember to call or only call very rarely.

That said it can be annoying at times, I'm constantly hearing about my cousin's girlfriends life, even though I've never met or talked to her...

It seems I am the only one on the planet not on Facebook. I am considering considering signing up. I have little to no interest meeting people again from high school, they were douches back then and probably are now. But I am starting to wonder if my total rejection of it is me becoming an old fart who is simply out of touch. Not that I care, but even my sister who is more anti-social than me is on Facebook now...

@red,

While it's true that "no one cares what you had for breakfast" where these sites are concerned, they can be priceless for small businesses to reach out to customers. They're also good once you learn to ignore all the chaff and only read those people you honestly give a damn about. Since I'm 200 miles from "home", I use it liberally to keep up with friends in Huntsville, but not much else.

a few months ago I was able to show my Aunt and Mother pictures that our relatives from Europe had posted.

That is the best reason for Facebook to date.
