Not all scrap gold is created equal and once it's out in the system it all looks and melts the same but it's not necessarily the same when you wear it. Your rings may be giving you cancer. Medical radiotherapy gold isn't the only source of radioactivity in gold. Gold has also been recycled from nuclear weapons programs. Also more common metals like Nickle suffer the same problem. Do you keep your coins in your pants pocket? Do your kids have an unusual number of limbs?
It kind of reminds me of the tales my cousin in Essen, Germany used to tell, of all the scrap merchants that flooded in when the wall fell down, truckloads of reclaimed steel from decommissioned weapons and nuclear plants.
