I just heard an interview with a comedian who has a new book out. I believe it was John Hodgman (the PC in the Mac ads) but I could be wrong. He said something funny but it made sense. The Culture wars in the USA is really between two cultures. That of Jock Culture vs Hacker Culture.
The Jocks believe in a hierarchial top down structure where everyone answers to the top. Like a coach during the game they turn to him (no bias here it's typically a him) and ask what to do next. They like to be told what to do. Certainly important to win wars to be lock step.
The Hackers believe that if we all shared a bit more and enjoyed our own niches of Nerdom the world would be a better place. Helping each other get along and work together while still having personal ownership does make a better world.
It's the interview and reflecting back on the stereotypes, such as the one last described, to think a bit deeper about the funny approach. And I see some truth to it.
The conservatives here are one's I'd assign to Jock Culture. There's a hierarchy and a goal and tipping that up is a bad thing. Red, for example, recently said he wants a leader to lead -- this is a Jock mentality. Conserve, means to keep the old and status quo., and it's clear Jock Culture lead in the 20th Century. It is the old. Many a time we've seen the Conservatives decry the scholary professors at universities.
But, as we switched out of the 20th Century those progressive ideals started leading too. Equality, Civil Rights, Fairness, cooperation. And certainly the OWS, which has no heirarchical structure, is a manifestation of the Nerd/Geek/Hacker Culture. Might doesn't make right. Knowledge is power. And a bit of mine and a bit of yours and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
Yeah idealized I realize that. But, I do see the Jock Culture trying to work to save their leaders and prevent the sharing as they decry it Communism.
