Joining a new commune..

Not sure I get it yet. For a second I had an inkling of self organizing cloud borg networking. Set up a new commune and it knows about the other communes starts to share across a distributed database. People set up groups and communities but they aren't tied to any server and will run wherever the resources happen to be available.

But that's too crazy and how do you control the revenue streams?

I'm actually just shooting ideas out of my arse for an open source, or at least shareware compiled Community Management System, something ala a combination of the best parts of Facebook and MySpace without all the kids and the huge privacy concerns...

I just stuck on the name Commune, because it seems to fit as a place where people gather, live, give me all their money, and find inner happiness.. :)

Hate to break it to you but the kids do their networking elsewhere now that the Gen-Xers and Grandma Baby Boomer showed up on Facebook.

I'm too old and un-hip to understand this social networking stuff. Still, maybe you should name it Kommunity.

It's not about reaching a particular audience as much as designing a full, modular system which allows other webmasters to set up their own social networking sites.

I'm thinking to provide a core system, and forums, then maybe develop cheap individual modules which can be tied in to extend the functionality differently for each individual site. Some might want a classifieds section, some might want a document workgroup module, still some might want to use it as a business Intranet which is totally secured behind firewalls.

Ya never know.

You're not too old. You just haven't been able to find one you're willing to try past all the bad opinions and paranoia (like Lee).

As for the name, it's about the domain name. I was trying to find a way to make the logo around the home button with a peace symbol, but as I'm sure Cecelia will attest, I suck at art work.. :)

I was mostly joking about Kommunity with a 'K'. I guess I had a Fleecy flashback...

I generally like the name 'Commune'. In terms of spelling and meaning it is very close to 'community', yet still different, which makes it a great and smart name for any new take on online communities.

That being said, a commune is generally associated with people sharing space and things, personal interaction and much more. One thing that the term is generally not associated with would be 'privacy', however. Quite the opposite, in fact. If the key differentiator of the new CMS is supposed to be user privacy, then there are definitely better names out there.

On the other hand, I am not sure how a small indepedent developer or company could promise better data safety (an essential part of privacy on the internet) while multi-billion dollar companies are victims of data theft all the time.

Valid points on the name, though I'm still rather attached to it.

In reference to privacy, I'm referring more to an approach than a guarantee of any sorts. All the current sites operate on "when user says something, broadcast it to the world by default". I'm simply talking about "when user says something, don't broadcast it to a single person until the user says it's ok"

Had a beer and bloggers meeting Tuesday where we sat in a restaurant, fired up the iPhone app "near me" and found a woman sitting on the other side of the restaurant, her name, her number, her associated family's names and addresses, along with her facebook page with a note saying how she was leaving on vacation. A click of the link took us to Google for a street view of her house.

That's absolutely insane, but it's true, and it I saw it first-hand. Until I'd seen it, I didn't understand Lee's paranoia. Luckily, we each sat and tried to reproduce the same type of results looking up one another and all it takes is a modicum of common sense to protect against.

All I want to do is write a game changer which has said modicum of common sense built in.
