do we have a"way of life worth killing for" or do we still have a "country worth dying for"? does it matter? opine please...

Who is we?
I have a pretty good life and there are a lot of people who have to die for it the way things are arranged now (people in mineral rich areas who might get together and demand a cut of mining profits for example if they aren't driven off the land, or who might get together to form a democratic government and charge reasonable royalties).

Then again, I live well and recognize that I do not need to live as well as I do (in fact I am living better than I want and at the very edge of my means). But if by "we", you mean the ruling classes who like to use phrases "our way of life" and don't correct us when we mistakenly include ourselves in that group, then no. I don't think that sort of lifestyle is justified at all so cannot justify killing but that is where all the money from all of the killing is ending up and ultimately their lifestyle is bad for all of us. They are already getting close to having to kill their own citizens to preserve their lifestyle and even if they don't actually shoot anyone their lifestyle kills people (by withholding the benefits of the wealth of the country from certain people).

Now, as to whether we have a "country worth dying for", that country would have to be the country that we could build. The country that I have is pretty good but has been turning into some other country that I don't like much. It is certainly worth, in my mind, fighting to turn the country around and I applaud the people who are able to stand on the front lines and take the CS and pepper spray (and spend 23 and 3/4 hours in a cell each time) but while there is a somewhat functional political system and a chance to build new media we shouldn't need to die to build the country we want.

You know, if you sell your house you could move to Winnipeg and live like a king AND have money left over. But then you'd be in Winnipeg and no one wants that. ;)

I like Winterpeg. But I would miss the ocean. And the going out in the winter without a jacket. And not smelling of DEET in the summer. And not shoveling snow off my drive. Hmm.

That's what everyone says.

war solves nothing

Floating down through the clouds
Memories come rushing up to meet me now.
But in the space between the heavens
and the corner of some foreign field
I had a dream.
I had a dream.
Good-bye macs,
Good-bye Ma.
After the service when you're walking slowly to the car
And the silver in her hair shines in the cold November air
You hear the tolling bell
And touch the silk in your lapel
And as the tear drops rise to meet the comfort of the band
You take her frail hand
And hold on to the dream.
A place to stay
"Oi! A real one ..."
Enough to eat
Somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
Where you can speak out loud
About your doubts and fears
And what's more no-one ever disappears
You never hear their standard issue kicking in your door.
You can relax on both sides of the tracks
And maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control
And everyone has recourse to the law
And no-one kills the children anymore.
And no one kills the children anymore.

Night after night
Going round and round my brain
His dream is driving me insane.
In the corner of some foreign field
The gunner sleeps tonight.
What's done is done.
We cannot just write off his final scene.
Take heed of the dream.
Take heed.

i thought that war solved nothing...i was wrong... it cures each man... one by one... for i am healed...
