Douglas Rushkoff says to understand a world increasingly run by programs and fill a desperate need for code-literate workers, we should be learning computer coding along with our arithmetic.

I agree. I think I posted the article here at one time... Computer professionals in Minnesota are at a 2.5% unemployment. Database Administrators at 0.2%. So if you guys who hang out in Alabama aren't too afraid of -30 temps a few days a year we have jobs, good pay, and Minneapolisis one of the fittest cities in the USA.

I can code "Hello World" in GCC and can write a halfway competent program in BASIC. How much can I expect to earn? :p

If you're comptent in Basic, like me you probably learned 10 Print "Red"; 20 Goto 10. The Microsoft Basic (which by the way was on the Amiga, Apple, and Commodore) has been updated to not include line numbers, (I think they shot the goto command too.) You can transition to Visual Basic and .Net fairly easily. With 6 months of work you'd probably be lower paid - $30K or so here in Minnesota. After a couple of years you'd likely have to jump ship but could expect to nearly double your salary.

In fact I had two employees in the last 3 years that did exactly that. (One now earns $90K but that's a bit higher than normal after 3 years experience.)
