Let's all go get Rickets!!

Although vitamin D is commonly called a vitamin, it is not actually a dietary vitamin, as it can be synthesized by most mammals exposed to sunlight

Most animals can also synthesize vitamin C. Sadly humans are not among them.

With humans slathering on sunscreen perhaps we just don't make enough D these days, or maybe too much time indoors. Then again, perhaps the problem is a lack of calcium. Probably poverty playing a role in that somehow.

I searched for more information about this and according to this article the suggestion (esp from the commentators below) is lack of education by immigrants are inflating the statistics.

Which doesn't surprise me too much. The short-term solution is providing vitamins but the long term solution is always education.

The Nice review comes as Prof Davies published a report on children’s health. It said reducing child obesity by one percentage point could save the NHS £1billion a year due to fewer long-term problems.
well, no kidding. I am SO grateful to come from an educated family. The greatest gift I have.

Every time I go to the UK I'm surprised how pale people are over there. I guess there are much less sun hours over there, despite just being a little hop over the tiny pond.

Feminist-vegan Carol J. Adams will give a lecture about the
"The Sexual Politics of Meat" at the University of Redlands and will explore:
  • "the relationship between patriarchal values and meat eating by interweaving the insights of feminism, vegetarianism, animal defense, and literary theory."
  • "the hidden connections between meat eating and patriarchy, between vegetarianism and feminism."
  • "male bonding in steakhouses or at barbecues are examples of a culture of male-dominant consumption of meat and women."
  • "meat-eating would not exist if female animals were not forced into pregnancy and their reproductive abilities exploited to produce milk and eggs."
  • “I don’t give a damn about statistics,” Adams said. “I feel that using statistics participates in a rationalized way of thinking about the problem that undercuts my perspective.”
  • "How our society is degrading to FISH, because we don't view them as individuals."
The plural of fish is fish so that's why they aren't treated as individuals.

Think I'll skip this lecture and head directly to the steakhouse
