9-year-old boy banned from baseball for being too good

http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slug=a ... &type=lgns

Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player— too good, it turns out.

The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said.

Officials for the three-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, said they will disband Jericho’s team, redistributing its players among other squads, and offered to refund $50 sign-up fees to anyone who asks for it. They say Jericho’s coach, Wilfred Vidro, has resigned.

Here we go again, can't be hurting the feelings of other kids who might not be as naturally talented or driven

League officials suggested that Jericho play other positions, or pitch against older players or in a different league.

Local attorney John Williams was planning to meet with Jericho’s parents Monday to discuss legal options.

“You don’t have to be learned in the law to know in your heart that it’s wrong,” he said. “Now you have to be punished because you excel at something?”

What a bunch of idiots. I have a nephew who had the same problem in football. He was too big and talented for his age appropriate league, but was refused in the older league for being too young. These parents who are afraid of little Johnny being beat in sports are teaching their children to run away from adversity. Makes me sick to my stomach! These morons should not have been allowed to reproduce in the first place. :x

I think the reaction here is probably way over the top. However, I do play in a hockey league and they have 4 or 5 divisions, each one with a different skill level. Sometimes there are teams that go into the wrong division; they're either too good or too bad. This basically ruins it for everyone as no one wants to lose OR win 12-0 every time. And yes, there have been cases where entire teams have been moved from one division to another (and teams only play teams within their division). Both sides need a fair challenge. Letting this kid pitch against sub-standard players isn't exactly helping him improve as he needs to be challenged as much as possible. Without this balance it no longer becomes fun for anyone involved and the league itself could lose players. I know that in the league that I play, we steel players from other leagues all the time because ours is just "more fun", mostly because it's well balanced and every player can play with others who match their own level.

Having said that, completely disbanding the team is probably a bit much. I still think the kid needs to find a league which better caters to talented players (or perhaps play against older kids).

Just to quote the article itself:

“He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower,” Noble said. “There are a lot of beginners. This is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport.”

...

“Facing that kind of speed” is frightening for beginning players, Noble said.

With that in mind, it does seem like he's in the wrong league. It would be no different then a kid who sucks demanding that he play with the regional champions, just because he wants to. It seems to me that this is a "beer" league, but for kids. A "coke and chips" league you could say. Not sure why he wants to play in this league at all.
