More than 50,000 people in 2011 were arrested in New York City for possessing small amounts of marijuana -- the majority of whom were black and Latino -- at a considerable judicial and financial cost. New York City spends about $75 million every year on arresting people for recreational marijuana possession.

Interesting, albeit depressing figures.

not wasting $75 million on this sort of bullshit is a really good thing

One thing I have never been able to figure out about marijuana users. Do only stupid people smoke marijuana, or does smoking marijuana make you stupid?

At any rate, when they do smoke it, they never leave you alone. They always want you to smoke it too. Whyzzat? I guess they don't want to be the stupidest person in the room.

The reason you are unable to figure this out is because your question is badly formed. Many people who smoke marijuana are far from stupid. I know a few multimillionaires who quite like a spot of weed. Based on the theory that money means smarts then your premise is wrong. On a straight out IQ scale too I know some very smart people who like to smoke and who remain incredibly smart. It's not much different from alcohol. Some people have problems with impulse control, they will over indulge and you will notice them, but many more people will use alcohol for pleasure and not let it get the better of them. Most pot smokers I know are high functioning, successful people. I know a few people who do have gone overboard in their youth but even then I have never seen a guy ripped on pot punch holes in a wall at parties, but I have seen drunk guys do that. The tokers tend to be pretty mellow and easy to look after.

At any rate, when they do smoke it, they never leave you alone. They always want you to smoke it too. Whyzzat? I guess they don't want to be the stupidest person in the room.
I shouldn't imagine there is much danger of that.

I've never been able to figure out why people would ask such a stupid question.

At any rate, when they do smoke it, they never leave you alone. They always want you to smoke it too. Whyzzat?

Because you made it up, is my guess. My personal experience tells me quite different.

I guess they don't want to be the stupidest person in the room.

Well, if this post is anything to go by, as long as you're there they'll have little to worry about. ;)

years age when I would find myself at some parties and a few people decided to drink and others smoke pot.
As the pot smokers passed around this pot and a person next to me offered it to me I would simply say, "no thanks" and they would pass it to another person.

my experience is quite limited, I admit, but I have never seen anyone using pot to be angry, upset or aggressive. And I certainly NEVER felt forced to use any.

I've seen lots of drunk people act violent, loud, stupid and irrational, however.
pot users certainly CAN be stupid, but I suspect they are stupid even when not under the influence of any drug. Generally, they are very relaxed.

Perhaps if you showed some more interest in the world around you, you might be able to figure out anything at all one day. Perhaps...

Come now Cecilia, you've just seen it in action right here on Whyzzat.
Apparently, I've just been attacked by three pot users. They all seem angry and upset to me!
Not a mellow one in the bunch.:D

You see? You have completely unreliable perceptions of reality. That explains why you understand so little.:D

Indeed. I've only seen one person who sounded upset so far in this thread...

Anyhow, I suspect the higher level pot smokers tend to keep pretty quiet about such things, as there are pretty draconian laws against it, and smarter people tend to self-incriminate less.

BC is a bit more Laissez-faire. This is from our last 420. (The cops will confiscate your booze at this event though. They don't want trouble makers.)
That haze over the crowd ... it is what you think it is.

A Fluffy opinion:

Truly hilarious.
I point out the absurdity of using a drug that alters your state of mind and I am accused of being the one with an unreliable perception of reality.

That is almost as bad as Leary's notion that using LSD makes you smarter.
:dumb:

No you didn't. You made a quip that perhaps was intended to be humorous but because it was logically malformed and ignorant I didn't laugh. I merely set about to correct you. If what you said was said in seriousness then your experience is at variance with mine and that of many other people here, it seems. Perhaps you have a very "special"
type of pot smoker where you live or your perceptions are inaccurate.

As to the absurdity of using a drug that alters your state of mind, do you feel the same way about anti-depressants, or anti-psychotic drugs? Or is this merely a puritanical thing to do with recreational drugs and your need to control what other people do for fun? Alcohol makes you stupid too. A member of MENSA will still be incompetent while hammered on booze no matter what his sober IQ was. Are you one of those people who has never tried alcohol? If so, good for you. I would never dream of forcing you to use the stuff, but I also would not force you not to.

You seem to be generalizing something that may be specific to you. No offense, but you may seem like someone who really could use a good joint and that's just the subtle hint people are giving you.

Well I do take the view that Cecilia does, in that I don't need a drug to make me feel good, or to make me forget my troubles.
Leaving any health issues aside from direct use, the consequences of any form of illegal drug usually/eventually leads to some form of stupid action by the user and sometimes with consequences on other people also.

Get pulled over for speeding and smell like marijuana. Result; they search your car. Find a big enough stash, and go to jail, innocent passengers too. Do it enough times, and end up like Robert Downy Jr where your whole career could be in jeopardy. Read a newspaper, or an average day on the Web, and you will see someone of notoriety that has been caught at the airport, in a wreck, or on phone camera with a stash or using. Never seems to further their career.

Sure I am. Watched a friend high on marijuana once walk directly into a large floor fan, knocking it over and falling on it, ruining his arm for life.
Four of my cousins, brothers, from one family with ruined lives, from growing marijuana. One is in prison for life as a repeat offender growing marijuana. One that served 5 years for getting caught with a huge load, his brother dead by suicide facing the same charge, and the last one dead from the effects of marijuana on his emphysema. Three of those brothers were married with children, the fourth is the one in prison for life. All of them got their start from casual marijuana use.

Heavy Marijuana Use Doesn't Damage Brain

Analysis of Studies Finds Little Effect From Long-Term Use

WebMD Health News

July 1, 2003 -- Long-term and even daily marijuana use doesn't appear to cause permanent brain damage, adding to evidence that it can be a safe and effective treatment for a wide range of diseases, say researchers.

The researchers found only a "very small" impairment in memory and learning among long-term marijuana users. Otherwise, scores on thinking tests were similar to those who don't smoke marijuana, according to a new analysis of 15 previous studies.

In those studies, some 700 regular marijuana users were compared with 484 non-users on various aspects of brain function -- including reaction time, language and motor skills, reasoning ability, memory, and the ability to learn new information.

Surprising Finding

"We were somewhat surprised by our finding, especially since there's been a controversy for some years on whether long-term cannabis use causes brain damage," says lead researcher and psychiatrist Igor Grant, MD.

"I suppose we expected to see some differences in people who were heavy users, but in fact the differences were very minimal."

The marijuana users in those 15 studies -- which lasted between three months to more than 13 years -- had smoked marijuana several times a week or month or daily. Still, researchers say impairments were less than what is typically found from using alcohol or other drugs.

Well, one must consider that in many such cases these people had other problems and were using the drugs for self medication. Others turn to alcohol with equally nasty results. Heavy drug use of any kind is usually a sign of something else that's wrong.

So, in your list of pot stories, one guy got hurt by a fan, three guys got hurt by the laws against marijuana and one died of emphysema. Sounds like the laws are more dangerous than the pot. What did that last one get emphysema from anyway? Some legal drug like tobacco or industrial exposure?

I suspect one problem is that they are related to an idiot :D
