If you had a friend with mental health issues, who would you recommend they see? Would it be a waste of time and money?

Depends what type of mental health issue, I suppose. I'd certainly approach someone with Alzheimer's differently from someone who is trying to stab me.

This is kind of a question that's impossible for anyone else to answer. There are so many variables to consider, along with the "is it your place to suggest anything in the first place?" question that no one else knows about.

I think I mean depression and/or social anxiety disorder. I don't think I've seen examples where traditional shrinks help.

Good point.

You'll need to research it. Some people respond well to drugs, but I don't think that should be your first approach. MDs have a tendency to just keep upping the meds, and in some cases the side effects are worse then the disease (although if someone is suffering from schizophrenia, drugs might be your best bet). Some people just need a personal coach, that will both be there for them but also set goals for them. But there's no clear cut answer, especially when there are so many variables. Age, sex, history, etc all play a factor.

Maybe your friend just needs a friend.
