A bunch of religious fanatics went on a rampage and burned a christian church. It's not all that surprising. Being a religiously founded nation they aren't all that keen on Christians.

There have been a number of incidents like this recently, not just aimed at Christianity.

I'd like to say I'm in any way surprised by fact that this occurred.

But I'd be lying if I did.

Apparently, attacking churches is a popular pass time in the region: Iraqi Christians mourn 52 killed in church siege

Iraq's dwindling Christian community was grieving and afraid on Monday after militants seized a Baghdad church during evening Mass, held the congregation hostage and triggered a raid by Iraqi security forces. The bloodbath left at least 52 people killed and 67 wounded — nearly everyone inside.

They ordered the priest to call the Vatican to demand the release of 2 Muslim women who they claimed were being held captive by the Coptic church in Egypt. When the (Catholic) priest said he could not do that, the gunmen shot him and turned their guns on the congregation, killing most of those in the front pew.

A statement posted late Sunday by the Islamic State of Iraq [www.tvquran.com/]claimed responsibility for the attack.

It specifically mentioned two women in Egypt they maintain have converted to Islam and are being held against their will by Coptic's in Egypt.

The Egyptian women are ex-wives of Coptic priests that are believed to have sham converted to Islam to leave their husbands, since divorce is banned by the Coptic Church. One woman disappeared in 2004 and another in July of this year.

Coptics maintained the women had been kidnapped and demonstrated for their release. Both women were later recovered by Egyptian police, denied any Islamic conversions and were then sent away to monasteries.

In the posted message, the "Islamic State of Iraq" claim the two women are Muslim and they called upon the Vatican, to release the women, or they would "exterminate Iraqi Christians".

Yes, but that's understandable. Iraqis are "evil" (TM) after all.
I wouldn't say that. I'd say extremism is evil, and there's plenty of that to go around in the region and it's certainly not limited to any particular group.
