MorphOS 3.2 - Public Release

The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the public release of MorphOS 3.2, which introduces support for Power Mac G5 workstations, iBook G4 laptops and additional PowerBook G4 models. The 3.2 release also has a strong focus on improved network support with a completely new and improved NetStack core as well as support for wireless networks. In addition, there are several new network-related tools such as VNC client, a Remote Desktop Client and a tool showing detailed network statistics. As usual, the latest release also offers many new features and bug fixes. For an overview of the included changes, please read our release notes.

We strongly urge new users to carefully read our installation and troubleshooting guides before they attempt to install MorphOS for the first time. Existing users can upgrade via the familiar procedure but are encouraged to read the guides as well. MorphOS 3.2 is available for download in our files section.

iBook G4? Sweeeeeet - I have one of those right under this 'ere coffee table. :pint:

Neat. Looking at the website I see that AmiNet still exists. And so does my little ModemLink library I last updated in 1997! Wow, I almost forgot about that. I see it got 99 downloads, woohoo! :p However my WindowGrabber app doesn't show up, although maybe I named it something else, can't remember, it's been SOOOOO long

Well, compared to my ill-fated attempts to reanimate the Pegasos, that was unfeasibly straightforward:

@Robert
Compared to the old Frankenstein Amiga Classics of later years, most everything will be straight forward. If you have a few quirks, feel free to ask questions. Youtube should work pretty good on that laptop (may need to add a couple scripts for HTML5 mode and fullscreen), just click the full screen button. That puts the video being played in overlay mode which is much, much faster. "Full screen" is really "full browser" at the moment. Considering the limited resources, it handles Youtube pretty impressively.

BTW if you do register, please report the registration number to Pappasaur on Morphzone.

It seems my elation was a tad premature. The old iBook appears to be a little reluctant to reboot.

Typical. :missing:

Got it going again and tried to run OWB but got "need version 0 of cgxvideo" which I guess I'll have to download to a USB or somesuch if I can find one...

Progress! Posting this from the iBook.

Great! Now to get the free G5 running....

What fixed this weird error?

Replacing the harddisk might do the trick.

Possibly (although my suspicion is the problem is more serious) but I don't have a spare laptop drive lying around to check.

Ejecting the CD and resetting. Unfortunately the iBook appears to be on its last legs; every reboot is something of a lottery.

I'd suggest doing a low level scan on the HD if you have the capability. If not, iBooks can be had for a song.

I've upgraded my PowerMac G4 (FW800) 1.25Ghz registered system without a hitch.

Today I finished rebuilding the LCS on my PowerMac G5 2.7Ghz system and installed MorphOS 3.2 demo on it. I am typing this message with the G5 :-D Man this baby flies!

The G4 will be fore sale soon and I will be registering the G5 later in the upcoming week.

Red - where do you find these cheap iBooks? MN must be some hotbed or something. iBooks are $150-$200 on Craigslist, often they list how bad the battery is. Broken ones in the $50-$75 range. Perhaps it's me but I think under $100 for a 9+ year old iBook is reasonable but $200? (Okay checked today and there's one for $110 which looks like a good deal. Afterall, these 9 year old batteries are probably due for replacement.)

Also - any Radeon card is cool? Do the Nvidia one's work? I was going through my G5, it's getting there, but it might be an Nvidia one. Again spending too much time looking at used G5s and it seems most are Nvidia.

NVidia cards are not supported as NVidia do not provide hardware documentation to anyone but very large clients.

200USD for an iBook seems excessive to me as well. For that amount, a Powerbook should be a much better investment. The limited amount of graphics memory found in iBooks can be a serious bottleneck depending on what software you use.

Honestly you would be better off on eBay over Craigslist. Bargains can be found on Craigslist, but there always seems to be a number of people with unrealistic expectations of what their old hardware is worth. The best price would be snipping an auction, but often buy-it-now bargains can be found.

Pretty much any AGP Radeon video card from the R200 (8500, 9200 etc) or R300 (9600, 9800 etc) generation will work and even a few older, but I wouldn't bother with older. Only Mac editions are officially supported, but my experience is most PC ones that have been flashed will work. It seems the G5 is a little more picky, probably since it is a first release. My flashed 9800XT works in the G5 no problem, but my flashed 8500 doesn't (despite working on my G4).

One consideration when choosing between a R200 or R300 is Warp3d. If you want to use Warp3D software, pick a R200. If you really don't care to use Warp3d, definitely pick an R300. The MorphOS team has decided to stop supporting Warp3d module (Goa3D iirc) starting with the R300.
