Just a quick report on Disney's new kids film, "The Tooth Fairy", starring Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, Julie Andrews, Ashley Judd and Billy Crystal.

Summary - Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson plays an aging NHL hockey player (Derek Thompson) who has been stuck in the minors for the last 9 years and has become disillusioned. He has been nicknamed the tooth fairy by fans because he always knocks out someone's tooth during every game. He is so disillusioned with his career that when a kid asks for his autograph and says he wants to be just as good as Derek used to be, the kid is told to lower his expectations so he won't be disappointed. Well, Derek's disappointing the kid and his nickname results in a summons to serve as a Tooth Fairy for two weeks. Julie Andrews is the Fairy Godmother and heads the tooth department. Derek is assigned a case worker (portrayed by Stephen Merchant) and has to learn all the skills needed to be a tooth fairy, including wearing the appropriate attire and dealing with budget cuts. Along the way there are the gags and "shtick" that you would expect from such a plot. While there is nothing unexpected in the film, it does a good job of moving the story along leading to the fun conclusion.

The Good - keeping in mind that this film is meant for kids / the whole family, it is simple, clean fun and a good way to enjoy a matinee at the movies. You cannot help but laugh whether it is Billy Crystal as the Tooth Fairy equivalent of "Q" in the James Bond films, Dwayne having to deal all the "dangers" of being a tooth fairy or the cameo appearances by a few stars (Seth McFarlane among them as a "dealer" of tooth fairy contraband).

The Bad - for me there is none. If you are a person who cannot accept Dwayne as anything other than "The Rock" you will be disappointed as he does a good job of making fun of himself. I liken this film to another, "Be Cool" (the sequel to "Get Shorty") in which Dwayne definitely was not "the people's eyebrow" (for the record, I really liked "Be Cool").

The Ugly - none noted by me.

In short, if you have young kids or you just want to see an entertaining film, "The Tooth Fairy" will fit the bill for light-hearted, family oriented entertainment. There are no real messages in this film or earth shattering revelations, just a way to spend a few hours laughing. Your mileage may vary.
