Mr "I travelled all 57 States" president Obama embarasses himself yet again.

While the right-leaning blogs blaze with the inaccuracies, over-reaches and empty promises of last night’s Presidential Address to the Joint Session, I have been contemplating the backlash had it been Dubya who claimed this country invented the automobile.

President Obama, while trying to convince the taxpayers that we need to save the ineptitude that is Detroit, stated that he believes “The country that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it.”

Now, the infancy of the auto took on a number of forms – steam, electric, gasoline – but according to our very own Library of Congress, the credit for inventing the first automobile goes to Germany’s Karl Benz.

Benz’ three-wheeled, single chassis, gas-powered vehicle was on the road in 1885/86.

It wasn’t until 1895 that an American – George Baldwin Selden – received a patent for a gasoline-powered carriage. His invention was never manufactured.

Americans invented the mass produced automobile industry, which is what Obama was talking about. Obama was trying to inspire people last night, not making a history lesson. I don't think anyone REALLY cares who invented the very first automobile, at least not when talking about how to salvage the US auto industry. Not sure why you go so out of your way to find fault with the guy.

Obama - like myself and Glaucus - understands that Ford developed the factory environment that made making a shitload of cars possible. And it not only reflects the cleverness required to come up with that idea, but the hard work by everyone involved in making those cars.

it's THAT work that Obama was refering to.

You could also point out that it was America that went to the Moon, but actually there were many historical moments long before the 1960's that had to happen before NASA could accomplish that task.

PLus, it's beside the point. When we (humans) decided it was time to do this, it took thousands of people each doing their bit - and not all of them were americans. It's the Effort that matters.

Obama is trying to get people to understand that we need to find our spines, lift ourselves by our bootstraps and get moving. The people that whine about unimportant shit are cowards who don't want to make the Big Effort.

When the going gets tough, the Tough get going

Three wheeled vehicles in Minnesota are classified as motorcycles. Automobiles have 4 wheels not 3.

President Barack Obama, fresh off the most expensive first month as POTUS in American history, has now tapped Joe Biden to oversee the "implementation of the stimulus package".

@MetalMan

Yeah the Dems have been in this position before! It is strangely familiar to the first Republican Great Depression occurred and how Dems got us out of that mess.

Government was also the fastest growing job sector under Bush. So far looks like change is not so much change. Soon all jobs will be government, but at least then everyone will have a job! :)

BTW, Putin just recently warned the US against socialism. Oh, how the times have changed. Once upon a time Russia was commie and bogged down in Afghanistan, and now ...
