I heard about that. Can't wait to hear all the different theories as to what it may be.

Kim Jong Il on his autumn cruise around the Pacific? :python:

Funny, that's exactly what I was thinking!

Options are:

The US launched something just to remind folks that it can.

Someone else launched something off th coast of the US to let the US know that they could fire off missiles right in their back yard.

It was an embarrassing accidental launch.

It was a secret mission, perhaps a test (strange place to have one though).

It's a private vehicle (but no-one's talking about it).

In the first four cases no-one will say a thing. Some cover story MAY come out later.

In the last case you'd expect the parties involved would like to talk about it, unless they were operating without appropriate permissions and license in which case I'd expect them to be paraded about by stony faced authority figures grumbling half heartedly about not having clearance.

For the first four options though I wouldn't expect to hear the real story. Nothing good would come from talking about it publicly.

Well, they said it was probably launched off some islands which are in that area. The most plausible scenario I've heard so far is that some private company fired it without getting the right approval, or possibly by accident. When the military shows off toys they usually try to attract as much attention as possible (think MOAB).

And if it was a foreign nation, they might keep it secret or they might make the most of it. Depends who it is.

... or it could be a case of mistaken identity. It could be, as some are saying, just a big contrail seen from a particular angle. Looking at the video again, a lot of what I initially took as rapid climbing is or could be an artifact from the way the cameraman zooms and pans on this trail. This is a rather prosaic and dull alternative but it has merit. A second shot from another location would clear this up pretty quickly but no-one else seems to have noticed this thing.

Personally, I tend to think that if it actually was a missile, one of these two explanations is correct. Private folks would probably need to register something that large, and I just can't see the US launching something without advertising some reason as to why.

My personal feeling is someone screwed up a practice drill and actually launched the thing. :P

but wait ... there's more ... oh, so much more...

We seem to always get pics and video clips of what seems like a missile that's been launched some time ago, haven't actually seen pics or vids of the missile at the moment of launch, rapidly ascending from the ground. I think right now the most logical explanation is a contrail. Damn you water vapor, always masquerading as a poison gas cloud or a dangerous missile launch.

My understanding is this event has been written off as a misidentified contrail. It appears from other angles the vapor trail doesn't look as missile like. In addition, there was a flight in this area at the same time.

Of course we all know it's Bigfoot's secret UFO base.
