A 59-year-old man has been jailed in Gastonia, N.C., on charges of larceny after allegedly robbing an RBC Bank for $1 so he could get health care in prison. Richard James Verone handed a female teller a note demanding the money and claiming that he had a gun, according to the police report.

Full story here.

Makes you wonder how many more people will follow this guy's reasoning given the increasing levels of unemployment and poverty.

Another welfare user, I admit that he did use his brain to take advantage of the jail system. It a shame that his idea did not work out as planned.

when people are desperate they will do whatever they can. I applaud they guy for not harming anyone.

and how dare anyone - especially the rich - call this "manipulating the system" when the rich do this all the time at WAY higher rates. please, the koch bros are most definitely manipulating the system. and tons of people are getting screwed over.

He did try to manipulating the system just as the rich did as well. I see nothing wrong with that. Many people will try to find away to get around the law where there may be a loophole. I applaud the guy for trying to find the loophole to get free health care. The welfare users always try to get something for security while the rich try to get capitalism. The different is the way they are thinking.

To be fair, even he admits he's manipulating the system.

From the article:

Verone told reporters. "If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care, then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care."

And I wholeheartedly support him in this. What angers me is that he has been forced to go to this extreme in order to get even basic healthcare in what is supposedly one of the most developed countries on earth. No one should have to do this.
