New Legislation To Help Your Credit Score
Legislation in Congress could help Americans who've seen their credit scores drop because of medical bills.
A bill proposed by a North Carolina Congressman would require the three major credit bureaus to remove records of medical debt up to $2,500, within 45 days of the debt being paid off.
The bill could be voted on as early as this fall. If approved, medical debts would no longer be factored into consumer credit scores.
Currently, a single medical debt can knock about 50 points from an average credit score even if the debt was paid off years ago.
Credit bureaus and lenders argue removing medical debt from credit reports takes away an important factor in determining loan decisions.
