New planet may be "just right" for life

More than twice the size of earth? Heavy duty. :drumroll:

It's certainly an important find, but without knowing what the atmosphere is like, I'd be more cautious. After all, viewed purely from a planetary size / orbital distance from star perspective, Venus could be Earth's tropical twin sister. Yet conditions there could not be less friendly to life as we know it. A crushingly deep, hot CO2 atmosphere that's nearly 7% the density of water (and no longer technically a gas) at the surface, where temperatures can get high enough to melt lead. There is a region, some 50km or so up in the atmosphere where pressure and temperatures are both comfortable by terrestrial standards, provided you don't mind being in a haze of concentrated sulfuric acid vapour.

Having said all that, there's probably some polyextremophile that would be at home in said (cloud layer) environment.

Who bets the anti-climatists will run to build a spaceship and encourage us to pollute more?

What I'm more curious about is; which planets are pointing sensitive telescopes at planet Earth?

that's why the 1% should move there and live in their own pollution.

and leave the rest of us alone

i find the universe largely disinterested in us... or so i hope
We'll probably stay boring and unnoticed. Until of course we discover the black monolith on the dark side of the moon.

".. the monkey sat on a pile of stones..... and stared at the broken bone in his hand..."

Do you mean Phobos? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phobos_monolith

If I had to guess this 'monolith' will be like the Face on Mars -- with different angles and better resolution cameras it'll be found to be something mundane and natural.
Nah, the monolith I'm talking about is black, emits the occasional magnetic field, has the unique dimensions of 1, 4 and 9 and has a haunting soundtrack.

How about a Cloaked Romulan ship hiding near Mercury?? (2:17)

Thanks Metalman. That's as amusing as the monolith from aliens on Phobos stories.
