If you respect people who make things by hand, you should like this.

Sorry I could not find English, but you will get the idea. The cesta has been made by hand the same way for hundreds of years. It is still made by hand today, though the number of people skilled in the trade is dwindling. In case you didn't know, the cesta is used in the sport of Jai Alai.

Could have just ran the rod for the rim through a ring roller,
the plates through a sheet roller and welded together the assembly

Must be some kind of NY kickback scheme to do it the slow way

he could just order them premade from china for 3 bucks, and sit on his ass all day saying cha ching! and calling the city of new york fools, (or bread and butter) too. good gawd... this is ur complaint? an artisan isn't efficient enuff for your liking? lol...

would be stronger if cold rolled and faster to assemble

they sure would... but that isn't how he makes them. i used to make a good deal of limestone signs. i was handworking one of the stones one day and a guy came to order one... after watching me for about twenty minutes he says "you know it's a lot easier to use a sandblaster to do that." to which i replied, "i know, i have a sandblaster out back. this customer wanted one "hand tooled" and it is the difference between 12$ a letter and 30$". the finished product looks different.
