The Nigerian senate has passed a bill banning same-sex marriages, defying a threat from Britain to withhold aid from nations violating gay rights.

Given the amount of aid received from and influence of US fundie megachurches, the threat of loosing a few quid probably didn't amount to all that.

I find this just weird. Want to eat? You must follow our ideology.

I imagine similar threats the other way were made by the megachurches.

I mean it's not like they don't have form for it, consider those fundies who went over to Indonesia and refused to hand out water to refugees unless they converted.

Also, when did fairness and equality become bad things?

I'm not disagreeing. I think it is odd for anyone, gov or private, to withold aid based on ideology.

How is it all that different to your complaint that you don't like junkies getting benefits that they then use to fund their habits?

Doing illegal drugs makes you a minority?

The Rastafarians might argue that point. ;)

But the basic point I was trying to get across was that you were unhappy because your tax money was going toward something you disliked intently (and with good reason I might add), so how is doing the same (albeit on a larger scale) that different?

I wouldn't compare a sexual preference that people are likely born with illegal activity :D

But seriously, gay marraige is a very touchy subject. I see both sides of the argument. If you would have asked me 15 years ago, I would have said no to gay marraige. I didn't hate gay people and I wasn't even uncomfortable with homosoexuality. I now understand the argument that (in he USA) benefits of a spouse is missing without marraige. That is probably not the case in Nigeria? Where do you draw the line in imposing a certain ideology? Why is it being pushed so hard here when other nations like Pakistan get a pass?

Touché sir, well played :D

There is that, but also it is a response in part to the claims of homosexuals being incapable of being anything other than promiscuous. Not to mention a public declaration of commitment.

Tbh as far as gay marriage goes, what annoyed me most was the fact that those who were for it allowed it to be termed as such, I suspect that if they had pushed aside that and kept talking of "civil partnerships" instead they probably would have had a much easier time of getting it into the statute books, not to mention robbing the far right of the ability to attack it as easily. But I will concede that there are many who might disagree with this view.

I think it's being pressed in many parts of the world, it's just that the north African states are increasingly becoming more hostile to minorities, not just gays but generally, hence they get more press.

As for Pakistan... There is the whole thing of the establishment not wanting to upset key allies in T.W.A.T. as well as not wanting to incite more anti Islam stuff as a whole.
