If this law is read loosely enough, it could mean that regular folks won't be able to grow their own food at which point you will be truly owned.

Now that may sound a little overwrought but considering the Monsanto connection, I suspect it's pretty much the correct reading. But you'll probably be OK growing so long as you always buy Monsanto seed at Monsanto prices and don't try to save seed from year to year.

Does that sound like a stretch? Well, Monsanto wrote the Iraq law that the US put in place while still an occupying power (an bit of an illegal thing to do but who can argue, eh?) that makes it illegal for farmer to save their own seed and forces them to buy from US seed producers.

And they're busting farmers all over the place for growing GMOs without a license even when they are trying NOT to grow those seeds.

this idea actually goes against the whole GREEN thing of getting food locally - what is more local than your own backyard?

H.R. 875: Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009

The bill sponsors have what party affiliation in common? :slingshot:

The bill applies to all manner of "Food Establishments" and "Food Production Facilities."
The bill would appear to even cover downtown hot dog street vendors. The bill also applies to your personal family garden since no exemption is granted.

btw, The Definition of interstate commerce is The buying and selling of products and services across state borders.

unless your garden is in another state and you carry a tomato into your kitchen I can't see how this so called "law" applies

It is all in how they intend to interpret the law. Most Florida home owners have come to expect the absolute WORST from gov. Earlier this decade the state hired jack booted thugs to illegally enter every homeowner's private property to remove all citrus trees. This was done under the guise of stopping the spread of citrus canker, but it was all a lie. They didn't cut down any commercial grower's tree, they refused to prove the threat and worst of all citrus canker in no way harms the tree or fruit, it only harms APPEARNCE. It was all a big scam to get rid of individual's trees in order to benefit the commercial growers. As predicted, prices at the store went from about $1 per bag to about $2-$3 per individual orange at one point.

A couple years ago it was ruled to have been unconstitutional and home owners got a tiny amount of money compensation from the class action lawsuit, but the trees are all gone. It takes many years or decades for trees to fully grow.

Oh yeah and this was under a republican governor named Jeb Bush. Democrats are even worse when it comes to individual property rights. I would be very leary of any legislation!

seems to me there's NO reason to live in FL and assume anyone there has read the Constitution

NY may not be perfect, but if some asshole tried that shit here, there would be a {bleep} riot!
:hammer:
