Here's a seemingly well-written article from CNN about oft-misused "quotes from the Bible" that aren't actually in there. The gist of it being that the vast majority of people out there who quote "Biblesque" type scripture usually have never actually read the book itself and most "quotes" are actually the historical equivalent of urban legend.

Amongst these misbegotten quotes are "The Lord works in mysterious ways" and "Spare the rod, spoil the child".

It's my understaning " Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child" is derived from Proverbs 23 -- "Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish them with the rod, they will not die. Punish them with the rod and save them from death. "
