MSNBC has an interesting commentary on the death of SciFi (aka SyFy, aka Siffy) in the interest of profits.

So long, nerds! Syfy doesn't need you

I guess Science Fiction doesn't pay as well as Ed McMahon's wrestling venture...

The problem with Sci-Fi Channel, is the Sci-Fi channel itself. If you ever ran out to the Movie Gallery or Blockbuster because you really wanted to watch a movie and made the mistake of renting one of their made for TV stinkers packed as a real movie, you'l know exactly what I mean. I mean come on, could Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis be any more of a bastardization of the original Return of the Living Dead? Did Lake Placid 2 have a single redeeming value? The problem is the name "Sci-Fi Channel" is no where on the DVD case, and the slick misleading case makes you think it is at least a B-Movie level, straight to DVD sequel. Instead you get a steaming pile of the worst imaginable made for TV stinker.

A few years ago I would still rent movies on occasion, Sci-Fi made for TV dung piles are one of the reasons I stopped completely. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Sadly this is no surprise. The "SyFy" (when did they contract syph by the way) network has been moving away from its genre for quite a while. What made the network apparently doesn't make money fast enough for them (not that they budget for quality SciFi anyway) so it's time to bring in the clowns... err... "professional" wrestlers. :hammer:

As the article linked above points out, time to program that DVR. I guess my Friday nights will be spent outside the house now. :pint:

I guess science fiction just takes too much money to make.

DUNE (the series on Sci Fi Channel) cost about 20 million american. that's about 6 hours. well less than 6 hours of show because they add in commercials.

I think Children Of Dune was about the same but they hired fewer people. The special effects crew was Area 51 and Us (AI, Effects).

It's a shame because quality science fiction is not going to be made without some commitment and money.
