Obama promised to close Guantánamo and he lied

I agree! Guantanamo is one of his failed promises. Though I don't hear anyone talking about closing this camp now and it should be done.

Obama promised to close Guantánamo and he lied

Yes.
He lied.
I've complained about this several times on here.
It's the main reason I don't take anything he says at face value.

It's a pity because he really had a chance to restore a bit of faith in US politics from an outsider's perspective.
Instead, he decided to go down the well-trodden-to-the-point-of-being-worn-away route of lying-bastard-US-president.
Not that I was surprised (are they ever anything other than lying bastards?), just disappointed.

Yes we can = No we won't.

Administration officials lay blame for the failed initiative on Congress, including Democrats who deserted the president, sometimes in droves. The debate, they said, became suffused with fear — fear that transferring detainees to American soil would create a genuine security threat, fear that closing Guantanamo would be electoral suicide. Some Democratic lawmakers pleaded with the White House not to press too hard, according to administration officials.
The White House asserts it was fully engaged in the effort to close Guantanamo.
“Any claim that the White House didn’t fight to close Guantanamo is just flat wrong,” spokesman Tommy Vietor said.
This account of the unraveling of Obama’s pledge to close Guantanamo is based on interviews with more than 30 current and former administration officials, as well as members of Congress and their staff, members of the George W. Bush administration, and activists. Many of them would speak about internal or sensitive deliberations only on the condition of anonymity.
looks like the real blame lies squarely at the feet of all our elected "representatives"

Whilst that may be true, he hasn't exactly made a fuss about it.

He promised to shut the place then didn't shut the place. If the only reason for that was the above, he should be reminding people of that fact every time he makes a speech:
"I want to close that concentration camp but they won't let me," should be the refrain.

It isn't and the only conclusion I can reasonably come to is this:
Obama is a liar - same as the last guy, and the guy before him, and the guy before him, etc.

WASHINGTON. D.C. – Rep. Darrell Issa today praised a decision by the U.S. Senate to eliminate $80 million requested by the Obama Administration to close the Guantanamo detention facility.

“The U.S. Senate is adding a dose of common sense to the President’s plans for closing the Guantanamo prison,” said Issa. “This decision should come as a relief to military communities.”

“On his first day in office, President Obama put in motion a half-baked plan to close the Guantanamo Bay prison that failed to specify where dangerous enemy combatants would be sent. To this day, the Administration has still not put forward a plan for where detainees will be held.”

“The suggestion that dangerous detainees should be housed on U.S. military bases such as Camp Pendleton or Miramar has been met with rightful outrage in both Congress and the public. Although the President retains the power to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, his premature announcement and plan has failed win the support and confidence of Congress.”

what he did actually was a bit of political "strategery", he did what he said he'd do, but he knew full well nobody would go along with it.... thereby shifting the blame... in fact all theyd have to do to shut it still, tomorrow, is to re-fund the proposed shut down which is only on the back burner due to its lack of funding...

It’s as if all that Obama 2008 campaign rhetoric on international-law, humanitarian, have-you-no-decency crap was just . . . partisan bullsh!t.

The poll shows that 53 percent of self-identified liberal Democrats — and 67 percent of moderate or conservative Democrats — support keeping Guantanamo Bay open. He pledged during his first week in office to close the prison within a year, but he has not done so.

Glen Greenwald: A core plank in the Democratic critique of the Bush/Cheney civil liberties assault was the notion that the President could do whatever he wants, in secret and with no checks, to anyone he accuses without trial of being a Terrorist – even including eavesdropping on their communications or detaining them without due process. But President Obama has not only done the same thing, but has gone much farther than mere eavesdropping or detention: he has asserted the power even to kill citizens without due process.

about the Awlaki assassination: “We needed a court order to eavesdrop on him but we didn’t need a court order to kill him.

Barack Obama has made the Bush/Cheney War on Terror policies the standard U.S. policy for his administration.
Congrats Obama, well done!

and republicans would be calling him soft on the defense of amerikka if he'd have done any less...

Yup Obama clearly does support many of the same policies as Republicans. As a matter of fact he's more conservative than Reagan. Though again still the best choice out of the two we had for Prez last election, which is sad.

first we have to fix the congress. there's way too many wackos and assholes in congress to get anything useful done. You could have jesus H {bleep} christ as President and with this congress it still would be the deadlock it is now.
the problem with blaming Obama is that it solves nothing. There are THREE branches of the American government and to serve the citizens all THREE have to move forward.

right now the Supreme Court has too many douchebags (the corporations are people is a real moronic idea), and congress is mired in nonsense.

Obama does try to make progress. Just today he cut that No Child Left Behind bullshit.

Your right on Cecilia. Though today I fear Obama will cave to the Priests on Healthcare. The result of this is institutions again have more rights than female citizens.

yes, it's true Obama does work the Diplomacy Angle a bit too much. And it's not as if I'M NOT disappointed gitmo isn't closed. Of course I am. It doesn't even help to point out that many people who Were in that stupid place are now returned home (or where ever they are). The damn PLACE is still there. and it's a complete bullshit embarrassment.

It just proves what I have said for so long: it's easy to start a war (or in this case a bs prison), it's VERY hard to stop it. That's why people shouldn't start such things.

And I'm worried about the War on Women too. There isn't a war on Christmas but there is Absolutely a War on Women.

I'm glad komen has been shown to be the cocksucking shills they are. At least that was a victory of sorts

You mean Obama pissing all over the separation of church and state just like he pisses all over everything else? Why would he care about the First Ammendment to the Constitution when he doesn't care about the rest of it?

Obama is a liar
I would only call someone a liar if they knew they were not telling the truth at the time. It's quite possible he fully intended to close Guantanamo but for whatever reason didn't.

Just like every other promise, right? Just like he promised to restore our rights by abolishing the Patriot Act. How did that work out? Oh, right, expanding it, NDAA and order executions of US citizens without trail and such...

Possible? Yes.
Plausible? No.

If he really wanted it closed there are two possibilities:
1) He closes it.
2) He makes a fuss about not being able to close it.

He's done neither.

Or 3) New things come to light that make him change his mind.

If I say I'm gonna go home and then go straight to bed so I can be rested for the morning, but when I get home I see it's burned to the ground and spent the night gathering my things, am I liar?
