I see this as a step back. It looks like prior art will no longer be a valid challenge to a patent. That simplifies things for the courts, but not sure how that's better for anyone else. I was hoping he'd at least abolish or weaken software patents. The current fiasco in the mobile phone market is unsustainable when companies are willing to pay $12 billion for patents alone. That gives you an idea of what the cost of royalties are like - insane.

Uh - oh. Already I don't like the sound of "reform". You know this comes with money behind it so it's going to lock up rights and make it harder to go against money. You also know that Harper is going to have to "harmonize" which should be pretty easy because he's probably got exactly the same bill sitting on his desk from the same industry "think tank" that produced it for Obama.
 
You're most likely right. Harper will probably also follow Europe's lead and match their 20 year extension and maybe even raise them another 20. Wouldn't surprise me. All I gotta say is, the wrong politician died this summer.
