U.S. defends treated meat dubbed "pink slime" in school meals

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Department of Agriculture is defending the use of ammonium-treated beef, dubbed "pink slime" by detractors, in meals destined for schoolchildren as part of the national school lunch program.

The Internet news source The Daily reported this week that 7 million pounds (3.2 million kg) of the product -- beef trimmings treated partly with ammonium hydroxide to fight contamination -- would appear in school lunches this spring.

<Takes a few minutes to look online to learn about the compound.>
<sighs heavily>

No.

In short, in tiny amounts, like so many other things, it acts as a perservative and kills off certain bacteria by way of altering the PH levels such as e Coli.

The amounts needed to kill you, and in the concentrations needed are so high that you'd you would genuinely have to be off your rocker to attempt it, there are easier, cheaper and more effective methods to do so.

for the first four years of bush the tard we gotta treated to how it was all clintons fault.... bet someone gonna spin it all the way back to that soon... ;)

The consuming public was so outraged over McDonalds, that McD's was forced to stop using pink slime.

These trimmings, which consist of what’s left of the meat after all the choice cuts of beef are taken, are banned for human consumption in the U.K, where they are instead used for dog and chicken food. They are legal for consumption in the United States, however, where they are treated with ammonium hydroxide in order to kill off bacteria such as E. coli and make it safe for human consumption.

So let's see, UK bans it for human consumption. The sheeple public in a moment of clarity forces McDonalds to stop using it. Despite this, Obama's USDA gives the official nod for public school children. Not THEIR school children mind you...
