Seems like everyone here's avoiding that 600# gorilla in the room.

It's weird, having had the story forced down our throats for the past x months, but I don't really find it surprising that she got off considering the reported lack of solid evidence. Seems like the prosecution could have done a much better job of getting their proverbial crap together and making a stronger case against her.

Anyone else really surprised or shocked like the media tells us we should be?

oh, I agree the prosecution did a crappy job.
they should have figured out something better to charge her with considering the lack of evidence (for murder) or just not bothered.
the trouble with lawyers is that they forget they are dealing with jury's. ie, people who DON'T think like lawyers.
the OJ jury WAS manipulated (having watched that trial it was obvious....too much TV coverage affected THEM way more than anyone else).

in this case the DA just messed up, they thought they were being clever and failed. The jury basically had no choice.

the DA should have charged her with being a cunt and the jury would have come in 5 minutes with guilty

btw, I barely watched any news on this trial because it looked like a circus and I'm bored with kind of crap

I wasn't even interested in the story the way the media was telling people they should be. It was substitute news - a story they could run night after night that didn't effect most people, wouldn't change a thing no matter what the outcome but kept people away from real events and issues that were important.

I never even heard of this case before. I get my news from Whyzzat!

Oh Nooooo. Another thread of "Casey Anthony" from whyzzat.com.... What is the world is coming to?

The show is over and time to move on. I am sure the investigation will continue until hard evidence show up.

If it bleeds it leads. It's the Corporate Media direction that's been serving their bottom line so well. NPR did it right. Give the story 5 minutes then move onto actual issues in the nation such as the Republicans who appear to be trying to hold the nation hostage by dumping it into the toliet to not increase the debt ceiling for the huge debt they passed just a few months ago.

bingo!

Meanwhile, in dear old blighty, we've not heard a whisper about this case.

Unfortunately, unless the judge left the case open, she was declared not guilty, meaning she can't be tried again for the crime or murder -- should the evidence to link her to be found. Whether or not they ever find evidence on her committing the crime, she's gotten away with murder.

They should have charged her with things they could get a conviction on. If they'd stuck to little stuff like failing to report and tampering with a body, obstruction of justice, etc ... it would have lowered the bar for the jury and they could still string sentences together to get a fair stretch - but then it wouldn't have been a national story (which it shouldn't have been).

One of the problems with murder cases tried by jury is that sentences are too severe. This happens in other crimes where the sentences are too severe as well - juries are unwilling to subject other humans to punishments they feel are extreme. When a man coldly and preys on the weak and gives every impression that he will continue to do so unless stopped then juries will convict more readily than when the accused is someone whose crime may have been horrible in itself but who seems to be no great danger to the public. (So long as you're not killing other people's kids - and you don't have any other kids ... it looks like your crime spree is over).

I think the impression is that she needs more psychological help rather than prison time. If the jury could vote recommendation rather than just verdicts I think we would see her go to hospital, but the law doesn't work that way.

I'm still wondering why this case garnered so much nationwide media attention. It's not like it is unique. Happens many times a year.

I think it might be the party pictures. And it has a lot to do with the way television pushes flashy BS instead of complicated things like what's really going on in the world - and that's partly by design. If the internal shenanigans of the corporate/government world aren't on the news then did they happen?

Bill Mahrer has it summed up nicely in the first minute and a half.

The same reason she got off. A pretty young white woman murdered her pretty 2 year old white girl so she could go out and party more. Sadly, this is the ideal story for our force fed pop culture. Once it is in pop culture it gets over analyzed and common sense goes out the window. Things like obvious evidence and DNA go out the window to those it matters most to, the jurors. The jurors will get big TV deals and Casey Anthony will probably get a reality show.
