Only trained professionals should have guns

and that seems to rule out the police. This is the sort of thing that made me feel un-reassured when walking through London airports after the 7/7/05 bombings. There were machine guns on every corner but how many more people would be injured by the "good guys" if it ever came to a shoot out. Fortunately we didn't get to find out. Unfortunately it seems like the answer would have been - a lot.
