Hi,
As you might know, I'm not in the spot in life where a new car is being considered, but as my Mazda(Ford) pickup hits 95k miles, I begin to ponder what I might buy next, when life straightens out a bit.
To that end, I've established my needs and wants, and those are;
-- 4-door sedan or wagon (I like being able to haul groceries and not squeeze in/out of a two-door)
-- V8 power (I miss the Hemi in my Dodge)
-- comfortable for long trips with decent mileage on the highway.
-- want: quirky appeals to me. Unique appeals to me, which is why I loved my Big Orange Dodge Pickup so much, but comfort is important.
While I've looked at pretty much every car out there, regardless of origin, my experience with both Dodge and driving other cars, it essentially brings my choice down to about 3 cars, all used, all about the same price, with similar mileage (between 15k and 35k miles).
1) A 2005-2008 Dodge Charger RT
-- PLENTY of power in a reliable Hemi power (345hp)
-- 25 mpg on the highway (same as my little 4-banger truck now)
-- big and comfy
-- con: resale value sucks
2) A similar Dodge Magnum Wagon
-- same as the Charger, except a 5-door wagon
-- quirky styling and customization possibilities are REALLY appealing to me.
3) A 2004-2006 Jaguar XJ8
-- by far more comfortable than either Dodge
-- resale value pretty stable
-- far more upscale than either Dodge
-- styling is fantastic. Wouldn't need or beg customizing.
-- con: reliability?
-- con: expensive to upkeep
-- con: 4.2l V8 versus 5.7l V8 in the dodge. Similar mileage but not as much power
All can be had here in the states, used for around 16 to 18k, which -- though I HATE to admit it -- seems to be about average for a used car of any stature these days.
Anyone here have any experience with Jaguar XJ series? Know anyone who does?
Wayne
