Paul Ryan had a black girlfriend, therefore he must be bad for black people

Paul Ryan's black ex-girlfriend becomes a campaign issue

Liberals have been distracted from playing the race card for a couple of days while they hope people forget Vice President Joe Biden told a largely black audience that Republicans want to “put y’all back in chains.” But considering the alternative is talking about President Obama’s horrible, failed record, you knew it was only a matter of time before it came back.

And it’s back.

Keli Goff, “political correspondent” for TheRoot.com (described as a “leading online source of news and commentary from an African-American perspective”) who wrote a piece this week entitled, “Does Paul Ryan’s Black Ex-Girlfriend Matter?

In this incredibly dumb piece, Goff asks the all-important (to no one) question, “Is the fact that Ryan has dated interracially a noteworthy detail to consider when analyzing his politics and policies?

We hear talk about how Democrats can capture more of the “white vote,” but accept Obama will get 95%-98% of the “black vote.” Until we can get to the point when race-based blogs don’t exist, when we admit that self-segregation is just as damaging to the nation as forced segregation was, this will be the world in which we live and have to function.

But you can’t fix a problem until you admit something is a problem, so here’s my offer for some non-controversial common ground: I happily admit that NOT voting for President Obama because he’s half black is racist. Will Keli Goff, or any liberal, admit that voting FOR him for that reason is equally so? I’m waiting

I imagine the reason people think Ryan is bad for minorities and the poor is because libertarian policies are inherently bad for both. That he had a black girlfriend seems like little more than a smokescreen to avoid that point. YMMV, of course.

this is the 1st I've heard of this alleged girlfriend. I'm more amazed that someone so ugly would have a girlfriend, but other than that, i could care less.

Did you actually read the article? It is dems who are making an issue of it. If you did, what do you think dems are using the smokescreen for?

I did, I also had a scout around to try to find instances of it being used in the manner suggested, frankly I'm really not finding many hits from more progressive oriented sites, beyond a couple of flat out denials and a few collective WTFs. And yes, the question is as ridiculous and shallow as it seems, looking through the authors prior works shows up a similarly dubious standard of work.

Gotta be honest here, when the article starts talking about the NAACP being partisan, I do find myself asking "well what do you expect when many of the proposed cuts one side offers will do damage to their cause?" (not that they're going to get much more from the other lot, it has to be said) followed up by "Having mittens rip into them and then brag about it on fox later probably didn't do the GOP much good either."

Offtopic, the nytimes site renders horribly under Opera Mobile when displaying the desktop site.

The article to me just stinks of invented outrage. Given that the Dems have in recent days offered up legitimate reasons for getting angry, this one is just so much meh.

I dated a Russian girl. That means I can't possible hate authoritarian paternalistic values.

Ya, that is silly logic. But it seems race will be an issue in the US for some time to come. Sadly, there are probably reasons why that is.

Reading this article I see a difference in approaches. Here someone is talking about an opinion piece from a blogger that has no significant coverage in politics. Compare this to say Akin and what he said, his position of power, and the importance he has in the debate. Comparing power and scope this blogger in some back corner of the Internet is fairly insignificant. While he may be a Dem by voting the DNC or thei candidates aren't making this an issue.

It seems this guy is racist and that's sad. Though claiming Dema are doing this is overselling the comments of an individual.

So let me get this straight... Akin said something incredibly stupid and the party overwhelming condemned it and demands he step down. The fact Paul Ryan had a black girlfriend has been a media firestorm, not just by one back alley blogger either. Google paul ryan black girlfriend and get 57,000 hits. You find other gems like this.

One of Ryan's fraternity brother's, Gatewood Atwood, 42, from Kentucky, met Ryan in the spring of 1989 when the pair pledged for Delta Tau Delta.

He told MailOnline, "I don't recall that [he ever dated a black woman.] It certainly doesn't ring a bell. I don't think he has anything against black people in any way shape or form so I don't see any reason why he wouldn't have dated a woman like that. He is a great guy. But I don't know that he actually did."
The real racism at play here is the "liberal" democrat stance that all conservatives are racists white males and no American with dark skin would ever be a republican. Any black person who does not lock step with the DNC is demonized.

This is the treatment black conservatives get from the liberal media.

Listen to the rude and condescending questions

? really? i don't hear anyone talking about it. i'm serious

57,000 hits? How many are wtfs, people taking the piss out out the author, how many of those hits are simply reposts by aggregation sites?

Simply giving out a number on it's own is utterly useless as far as points go.

Beyond your link, it simply has not come up anywhere I might expect if it were becoming a "firestorm".

If Faethor or Cecilia started up a blog tomorrow and started saying that mittens uses kittens instead of clay pigeons and you see it, are you going to make an identical claim to the one you've made here?

Go take a look at the site the quotes came from, frankly on several of the articles caused me whiplash due to the ferocity of the double takes I did when reading them, it's like some mirror image of moonbattery.

Listen to the rude and condescending questions

Conservative politicians are in no position to demand politeness given their collective willingness for being thoroughly obnoxious and flat out dishonest toward the opposition.

And quite honestly, the default for any question aimed at any politician left or right should be aggressively pursued and dripping with distrust.

Or have you conveniently forgotten how your entire political class is bought and paid for by wallstreet, military contractors, oil companies and the media industry?

Keep drinking that Koolaid.

Man that's awesome. You yourself have waxed lyrical about the "elites" who own Washington, who do you think make up these "elites" exactly?

The Illuminati?

I'm serous about this, the above groups represent pretty much the collective wealth of the USA atm, in the UK it's mostly just the banks, we sold off just about everything else to you folks. So if it's not them, who?

Actually I misread the statement I quoted and replied to. My bad.

The overwhelming looked fairly weak as we found out the RNC drafts for Florida include the goal of removing abortion and they too give no exception for rape, incest, or health of the mother. And of course Akin wouldn't step down. I think he made it crystal clear he won't pullout. (oh going to hell for that one.)

I'm with Cecilia I've heard nothing about this, outside of Whyzzat. At this moment we know of no DNC leadership that stated or supported this. Something that can be said is the Tea Party Republicans worked harder in the last 2 years at using government influence on women than they did at trying to follow up on their primary goal to restore jobs. Instead those Tea Partiers vetoed bills that would create jobs.

You seem to think that hits hold value. If so I Binged 'Republicans are racists' for you. 17,000,000 hits! Must be even more true by your logic.

The real discrimination at play is Red's ability to call all Dems racist because he believes that all Dems believe that all Republicans are racists. Certainly there's lots of racism with the Republicans but some are actually decent people.

Actually I misread the statement I quoted and replied to. My bad.

In that case I retract my comment, though understand I'm a bit miffed - that was good quality snark and that shit's hard to come by lol!

Akin condemned yet... Another Void steps up to fill the Void.

...
Tom Smith, GOP candidate for Senate in Pennsylvania, today said that having a baby out of wedlock was similar to getting pregnant from rape. Apparently missing the part about consensual sex being different from a horrific act of violence.

and isn't it interesting that republicans seem to always be having babies without being married.

they seem to be the ones in need of "family values"
