Summary: Interesting idea for a new series (franchise) of movies - best suited for family viewing with (somewhat) older kids. It turns out that there are demi-gods living among us. Some are aware of their status but many are not. Our hero, Percy (son of Poseidon and a mortal mother) is in the latter category and is accused of stealing Zeus' lightning bolt. He has just 10 days to return the bolt or there will be war (of the gods) and all mortals will suffer.
The Good: Nice way to blend (given Hollywood's usual "interpretations") old myths with the modern world. While somewhat simplified in plot and continuity, this movie could well launch a franchise something along the lines of "Harry Potter", only for the teenage crowd and older. It's interesting to me that someone hasn't apparently tried this before (that I am aware of). Visuals are good enough to hold your attention but are certainly not "Avatar" quality. Still, a nice intro that I hope makes enough to spawn sequels... come on, once we are done with the Greeks we have the Egyptians, Mayans, etc.. this could be interesting...
The Bad: Not in the traditional sense of the word but "The American Harry Potter" as some critics are calling this, it is not. There is not the kind of linkage here that the Potter films have. I take it that if there are sequels, each movie will be intended as a stand alone. This film also does not have the "magic" that the Potter films have but I don't think it is intended to. It is for an older, if not more action oriented crowd. If you are expecting a Harry Potter type of universe, you will be disappointed as the blending of the myth and real worlds is not as clean or "innocent" as the Potter films.
The Ugly: Nothing really comes to mind. I suppose you could say this films runs a bit long in certain spots but as a launching point for a possible franchise, I can overlook this introductory effort.
Final Verdict: 6.5 out of 10. It's worth a matinee but only pay full price if you are into Greek mythology (but remember Hollywood's propensity to take "liberties" with original stories).
